I just picked up a 2011 R350 for grown children/ gandparent duties and am looking to upgrade the head unit for all the reasons
I started with the random google searchesand read through this old post hereand found good information on what one needs to know about the system but the market offerings are outdated
I need help to "reinvent the wheel" looking through current market offerings.
VIN lookup build codes: 512 COMAND APS WITH DVD CHANGER, 517 DIGITAL RADIO STANDARD HD (HIGH DEFINITION), 518 UNIVERSAL COMMUNICATIONS INTERFACE (UCI)
this is the COMAND APS NTG 2.5 correct?
my understanding is this is not the Harman/Kardon audio system so I don't have the optical connection issue to the amp. is there any peculiarities I should know connecting the "Standard audio" ??
I want a DVD since I have all the kids DVDs for the grandkids to watch. I do have the rear entertainment package, is the connection behind the head unit RCA?
I don't know much about these style head units except it's basically a android tablet with apps and I don't know what are good specs for android tablets are except more is gooder.
after doing preliminary search this is the system I am looking at, I'd really apreciate input on if this will run the audio and rear screens, it looks like it can be set up to run the rear entertainment and the Harman/Kardon system also.
any other suggestions would be apreciated.
the Erisin ES8581R is in. and I highly recomend it.
the wireless carplay works so i didn't bring out the usb cables to physically plug phones into the HU.
install was fairly easy just click in the big factory connector, but I did have to get some extra pieces.
1.two fakra to sma adapters to use the factory bluetooth and gps antennas
2. a hand full of rca to screw terminal adapters for the rear entertainment wiring, I could have put one on the factory rear camera cable instead of using an adapter but I bought an rca to fakra adapter for the rear camera which was absolutely plug and play no extra wiring needed besides the adapter.
the AM FM has no reception yet, my car didn't have the factory am fm anteanna double fakra cable that would just plug into the back of the new HU so awaiting the 15'fakra male to fakra female for the radio antenna to route from the sirus module to the radio although I kinda want to try and integrate the sirus module properly, dunno if it's possible integrating the sirus reciever to the android headunit.
I haven't gotten the headrest displays working yet. I don't know if it is a connection issue, the amazon usb to rca adapter I got is bad, or a setting issue.
I have an official erisin usb to rca adapter coming incase the amazon adapter is the isssue.
my understanding is the plug in the pic is the headrest monitor connections with video and audio for both monitors and the two clear teflon wires are the video while the brown and yellow are the sound and all the associated black common wires. is this correct?
No idea. Older action/shoot em up thing...one person said "no car sounds like that". I had to rewind to confirm it was an R...never saw a badge or logo beyond the grill. Was at a neighbors.. left before movie ended
The erisin ES102 USB-RCA-Converter came in and now the rear monitors work. Use the remote to set each monitor to the command unit up front (I don't recall the exact term but set it to the oe head unit) and it displays what is on the head unit screen.
so far so good. only a few hiccups:
max volume is limited to 40 for some reason, it's loud enough that it's not an issue for me, I don't need to try to blow out the speakers.
carplay fails to connect if maps is up and running on the phone when the car is turned on and will not connect no matter what afterward. if you shut the car off at a gas station, turn the maps off on the phone.
one instance of the headunit navigation locking up. I will see if it happens often or was just a random fluke.
