R63 Purchased

So, last week I purchased the R63 that was for sale in Alabama. Drove it back to OH. My boy couldn't sleep on the way down in my (ex) M6 (which was hard to part with), but slept nicely on the way back in the highway cruiser. After a clay bar and wax, here it is. Will do the interior and wheels next weekend. But it's pretty clean as is. All but lighting and rear seat entertainment options. Sort of don't want to drive it, lol, now that it's so sleek and shiny. Wife is thrilled with that Gotta say, the command system is pretty lacking in usefulness. And the rear camera should come on by itself when put in reverse. Otherwise, like it so far. Distronic rocks. All that's missing is a nice travel trailer... and the free time to go with it.

Congrats. I bought mine about 6 weeks ago. I bought it in Michigan and drove it home to NYC. I am sure you will enjoy it. It is far faster than it should be.

My rearview camera comes on when I put it into reverse. Command is a bit lacking; but, it is close to 7 years old now, so technology has come a long way.

Welcome to the club.

(Yes, I will be looking to change the rims.)

my rear camera comes on too when reverse engaged

would love to stick a new command or aftermarket system into the dash - that is the worst part of the car now

Thanks for the feedback, I'll need to look into that camera issue.

Thinking of a little spice... what do you think, blue, black or red calipers? Red might be a little too much for this vehicle's personality perhaps?... it's certainly a sleeper, and the blue might be more in line with that...hmmm. Not really feeling the existing gray ones.

Congrats! I had been admiring that Blue R63 for awhile and wondering who would finally be lucky enough to take it home. It looks great. And I would go with the blue calipers, since you are asking . . .

Thanks South Ocean, they said they were getting calls from all over the country, I was a little surprised it lasted as long as it did. I agree on the blue too

where exactly did you buy this r63 in Alabama? was it owned by a doctor? It had its engine replaced.

I'll be a third to chime in and say that my backup camera comes on when I shift into reverse. Works this way on the R and the CL.

This being said, if the entire command system is off, putting the vehicle in reverse does not turn the system on and display the backup camera. My wife's Range Rover does this and it is a great feature.

Congrats on this R purchase. I've been watching it and wondered why it took so long to sold. Glad someone on the forum snatched it up. Seems that all of the R63s that have been sold recently have gone to someone on this forum.

Do post pics if you do the brake caliper change. I'm thinking to paint mine in the AMG Carbon Ceramic gold/bronze color.

Perhaps the camera was installed outside of the factory? It should be on when car is in reverse.

I found the Comand useless as well. Even the NG2.5 upgrade is as equally woeful.

It never takes you on the shortest or best route, even with those options selected in the menu. Last week my was telling me to exit freeway and drive along a parallel road, only to rejoin the freeway?!

Could always just be an issue with the factory back up camera. I used to have gremlins on mine where the screen would go all black in reverse suggesting the camera is faulty, but that only happened a few times now never again.

Sorry, I haven't logged on for a while, hence the late replies.

fixbenz, curious why you think that might be the case? I got it in Mobile, and not from an individual. I had it checked out here in Columbus and there were no records or indications of that. They say the engine looks great, tranny, etc, all maintenance done and checks out fine. There may be an issue with the evaporator they are looking further in to which would not make me happy. Hopefully it's just the cabin air filter.

About the backup camera -- I guess I should have mentioned that I expected it to turn on when I put it into reverse by itself, meaning, not needing to manually turn on the command system. I guess I'll just leave it on when I turn the car off and see if that does it. Seems like it should just come on regardless when the car is put in reverse.

xxGenericSNxx, for sure -- I think I will be getting them and will post pics

Yep, I just leave the system on and keep it on mute.

So................... It is a leaking evaporator confirmed via a dye test. A major $ repair. Have to rip out the entire dash, multi-day project etc etc. No way the dealer I got it from didn't know... per my mechanic, there is the classic smell of the freon it uses in the cabin, that I thought was just a musty cabin filter. I was told point blank there were no issues with this vehicle. I should have had it looked at closer, that's on me for not digging in and finding out they were trying to screw me. This is a little hidden $ bomb. Dealer I got it from purchased it from an authorized Mercedes dealer who certainly would have known and not neglected to tell them. And they would have known as well, being as they are, you know, car dealers... who sell Mercedes, BMW, Audi.

Normally I buy from the Toy Barn in Columbus and you NEVER have to worry about this sleazy crap with them. Live and learn. Everything else is A ok but this however is a big expense that was passed along. Time to log on to Yelp, etc., tell of my experience, maybe I can help someone else.
