S63 Discussion

Having trouble finding a S550 so now looking at the CPO S63. What I'm finding is quite amazing. 2 of the three I've seen, '16's, have less than 10k miles and are looking for their fourth (4th) owner. The other is a '17 with 750 miles, yes 750 miles. What am I missing with these cars?

Mercedes S550 Coupe (now) CL55 (until last March 3), Ferrari 612, Porsche Macan GTS
Because I dont like the handling of my S Coupe, I started looking for a S65 (it is the only version that has the ABC suspension system). I actually found on Auto Trader a 2016 with 5K miles for $135K (which is $100K off of MSRP). I also found the identical car (color, options, everything) that was a 2016 that was NEW. I have no idea why a dealer would have on his lot a new 2016, some 3 years later.

However to me, that new 2016 is not worth much more than the used 2016 with 5K miles. 2 months after you buy the new one it will be worth exactly the same as the used one. So I tried negotiating with the dealer for the new one and he didn’t see it my way. We are only about 30K apart.

So sometimes there is no explaining these things logically. I suspect next year on Autotrader there will still be a new 2016 for sale.

By the way, whoever buys my S550 from me will be the 4th owner too (and it only has 20K on the clock). I think the explanation is that while they are great cars, they are just not world class handling GT cars like their predecessors. Also, when you owned a CL it was unique, nothing looked like it. Now everything Mercedes sells looks like the S class. So there is nothing unique or special that would make you want to be a long term owner of an S class (other than perhaps the S65 with a good suspension system—but it still is not a unique looker).

I owned my CL55 for 10 years and my feeling about that car was totally different than the feeling for my S550 now that I have owned it for a year.

This is one of the things I wonder about. I haven't driven an S63, so I don't think I have a good grasp of how cushy it is set to comfort compared to an S550/S560 set to comfort.

2012 CLS 63
If I had to guess I'd say maybe people are afraid of the m157 engine? I have this engine in my CLS63 its a great engine, easy to make good power on and decent mpg for what it is. That being said, there is some common drawbacks. Mine is a 2012 so an earlier model of the engine, by 2016+ most of the m157 kinks or drawbacks have been worked out and I would totally 100% get an s63 with that engine. My m157 has made it 103k miles. I believe the new s63 have M177 which definitely is an improved engine, it also could be the reason the m157 models are less desirable? not sure but this is all my speculation

the 550 suspension is like a wet noodle, theres no improving it. AMG is much firmer. Personally I like the 5.5 alot more than the 4. I think it has better response and torque. No matter what the spec may say

A lot of S63/S65 owners have many other cars and they don't get driven much. They typically get sold or traded to make room for something else.

I bought my S63 (2015 w/ 9k mi, bought as CPO 2-1/2 years ago) to daily drive/commute and don't think there is a better one out there... other than the 2018+ refresh of course. It's fast, reliable, comfortable, safe, and both luxurious and sporty. And it looks great. Only real competitors are the Lexus LC500 on the low end and new Bentley CGT on the high end. Former is a good car but styling is not for everyone and performance is lackluster, at least until the LC F comes along. Latter is excellent and has the advantage of DCT, but optics of driving a Bentley to work are problematic for some, myself included. Few know much about the S63/S65, so it slips 'under the radar' for a commute car.

I dont know why this would be an issue. I drive both my red Ferrari and my S Coupe to work (and my wife’s electric blue Porsche for that matter). You cant be constrained by the views of others in terms of enjoying your passion!
