What could cause this?

Looks to me like there is a problem with the rear leveling valve. Perhaps the control arm to the rear sway bar is toast. That will cause the valve to dump pressure as it thinks the car is unloaded in the rear (like when it is jacked up for service). A properly working system continually self levels, or maintains the proper stance when parked due to hydraulic pressure in the struts being locked in. The system is complex and not many people including MB trained techs have much of an idea how to work on it properly. Once sorted the ride is amazing.
