500SEC AMG vs .... a Subaru?

So my friend is looking at buying an 1984 AMG 500SEC. Does anyone know the specs on these cars? I can't seem to find anything. How about reliability/gas mileage? Also he seems to think he will smoke me 0-60. I have my doubts since its an auto and i'm sure its heavy . My car is ~210hp and 2900lbs, plus its a stick and AWD.

If it is actually a 1984 model, then it is probably a grey market (imported European) car. Depending on the method by which his car was imported, you might expect to prevail at lower speeds, but the stock 500-series engine actually has a very surprising amount of power on the higher end. If he is purchasing a legitimate AMG Hammer, however, then you should prepare for quite a lot of disappointment. Your friend should also ensure that the car actually underwent tuning by AMG, as a decal seems to constitute "AMG tuning" to many sellers.

Provided that it has been maintained properly, his car will be absolutely bulletproof. These are among the most reliable cars ever produced by Mercedes-Benz.

Here it is

My car hits high 14s in the quarter as it sits now. Should be mid 14s by the time I see him again.

With those modifications, he should be quite a formidable opponent. His car just might astonish you. If you decide to compete with him, I'll be very interested in reading about the outcome!

Ask for a dyno chart since that owner is claiming 300 hp. The RWHP should be around 240 to 250. That's not such an easy feat in a 500 2-valve engine.

I'm sure he'd beat me handily on the highway, but from a dig I really don't think he will. I'll be sure to post up if it he even buys the car (he seems pretty set on it, but I have my doubts). I highly doubt the previous owner's dyno'd it, I'm sure my friend will if he buys it.

That 500SEC AMG is most likely a European model. The European models do not have cats and they are not detuned for emissions sake. It is the unleashed version of that car. The Euro 500SE's (Sedans) run approxminately high 14's (Not being AMG) I'm not sure about the SEC's (Coupes) but the coupe is about 185lbs lighter than the sedan. And Mercedes-Benz make the best Automatic Transmissions in the world, if not the best manual trannys. So your friend might give you a run for your money. And like someone else said, if it's an actual AMG you will probably be better off on the sideline.

From a stop? Are you sure it was an STi? That's a low 13sec car.

Well it sounds like it will be a good race to me. There is no such thing as better off on the sideline. It's just my friend, its not like we are racing for anything but some friendly bragging rights. I really don't care if I lose. In fact I'd be glad he finally got a car that I don't destroy. lol

Thanks for the help so far guys. Here's my car if anyone was curious...

Nice ride. I like the 2.5 RS's or maybe even the 22B

My friend has a 95 Nissan 240SX with a 99 JDM SR20DET Swap. I have no problem keeping up with him down the interstate. His car runs low 13's. Of course if I wanted to leave him far behind I'd be driving the 6.3 hehe

The link says the car is not listed anymore. What modifications did it list?
