help with instrument cluster bulbs

All the bulbs in my instrument cluster have gone out. Can you guys tell me how to replace it? I looked at a repair manual and it says to get a special MB tool called an extractor hook to pull out the cluster. Can I use something else aside from that or where can i get this tool? I also need to replace the bulb on the gear selector any idea on how to do that? Would you guys also know what kind of bulbs I'm going to need? Thanks.

The instructions are for a w126 so it'll work for my car, too. Thanks a lot!

Would you also happen to know how I can get to the lights in the shifter that lights up the "P," "N," etc. on the gear selector? Thanks.

I am glad it worked for you... here is what I did....

I think you wanted to know how to change your lights at your shifter. Well here is where you have do.. if this will work for your car.... remove the ash tray...........Once that is removed as well as the housing you can easly remove the coin holder, switches or what ever is under your ash tray. It just slides out. Then reach under the shifter or grab the wood and slowly slid it forward. I can't remember if there are any clips there or not... but the whole wood system slides forward. Put your emergency brakes on and them pull your gear leaver back so you can have more room to swing the wood around.. you will see the lights which plug into the housing. I think there are two of them... it works on the refection. pretty neet... I hope it works for you... I need to replace my fuel pump today... Oh well, the price we pay for good cars.... have fun....

Are you sure that all of the bulbs are bad? Perhaps it is the rheostat switch?

It's behind the knob which adjusts the brightness of your instrument lights and resets your trip odometer. Usually on the left side of your instrument cluster.

People have been known to inadvertently turn this knob down blacking out their lights - a very easy fix if this is the case - turn them back up!

But the rheostat does go bad and you will see the part when you pull out the cluster.

Yeah, I've already tried to turn the switch back on, but the lights still don't work. I think the switch just went bad.
