Help with a starter removal on a 88, 420sel

I need to replace the starter on my benz but it looks buried in the compartment. I need some tips and advice on how best to remove it sp that i can replace it. Do i need to remove the manifold ? not sure where to begin., Any tips or advice would be appreciated !

Oh snap, i remember when i blew my starter-- not a fun job to tackle! Be prepare to get a few cuts on your hands.
If i remember right, you need an L ranch, at a socket/ranch 17 mm
I dont remember the size for the L ranch.
Disconnect the battery
The job is fairly easy, only 3 bolts i believe.

Oh no you do not need to remove the manifold
Get the front end of the car on jacks
and go from the bottom
Should be an easy 15-20 mins
It will be hard to get it out, because of the steering linkage right in that area
Other then that-very easy-just very tight compartment

question on the starter removal "bolts:
I can see one of the bolts from the front looking back at the starter but I cannot see the other bolt. is it screwed in the back of the starter cant see the second bolt at all ? do i need to drop the muffler system anyone know of a diagram of the starter in place ??? help thanks !

darn the site i usually use for repairs has shut down. Go to a MB dealer and buy the repair manual CD should cost about 20 US $ and it is very usuefull.

I faced the same problem and one of my friends posted a diagram (I'm not sure if its any different, I understand that there is a difference in engine but the whole procedure/starter placemtn should be the same
