How many miles on the car?
My thoughts are the car was designed to run on fossil fuel, not synthetic.
Synthetic can cause leaks that were not there when fossil oil was being used.
If you are burning oil and there is a visable smoke, than by using synthetic the smoke won't occurr, but you will still have the oil use.

If you think it is BS, thats your opinion. But by just typing BS, you gave this person NO feedback at all. I see from your profile that your cars are relatively new cars.
What is your experience in using MOBIL 1 in older model cars?

oil changes every 3,000 miles without fail
I used synthetics for a few years and the seals leaked big time. Changing back to heavy grade diesel oils and Castrol High Mileage oils almost cured the problem.
With synthetics the engine runs quieter. However I am using petroleum stuff because it is cheaper and the engine does not leak so much.

I too have much experience with old cars and synthetics
For example, I tried Mobil 1 on my old 280SE W116 and found it too thin for such a worn/high mileage engine
While I wouldn't say it's bad to run with Mobil 1, I don't think it is ideal
I get better performance from running real oil

I have the same experiance.
Before I overhauled my 89 300SE, I tried Syntetic oil, and did not get half the milage compare to normal oil before low level light came on.
Have a similar problem with the wifes 98 ML320.

daily oil change
The W126 engines are very easy to service. You can use any oil really but I find 15W40 "High Mileage" petroleum stuff best. When on special offer the OEM oil filter is only $10.00 each.

Synthetic
Let me first ask to those who say synthetic oil causes increased consumpton how long you ran synthetic when making these observations. I use Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil in all my cars, and for every application (engine, transmission, differential) with excellent results. The only time engine oil may increase is during the first 5k miles after switching (which is when I change my oil). This is often due to sludge and debris being cleaned out of your engine by the synthetic's superior detergency. The second oil change always sees diminishing consumption. Cars that did not consume oil to begin with never started after the switch, and any cars that did consume always ended us consuming MUCH less, usually 25% of what they originally did, after 15k miles (3 oil changes). Bear in mind that I probably made better use of the syn's detergents since I do 90% highway, usually at high speed. There is no validity to the claim that engines were "designed for fossil oil" since synthetic oil is simply a superior product that does not compromise on any of the qualities found in fossil oil, it only eliminates the pitfalls. I am speaking not only from my experience, but also from the knowledge gained by having faimly members working for both ExxonMobil Petrolium and Daimaler-Chrysler. Basically, if you want to keep your car, use the best possible oil. No matter how often you change it, fossil oil has inherent limitations that only a superior lubricant can overcome.
