HOW BOUT SOME EXPERT OPINION!!!
I HAVE A 1991 MB 300SE. STARTS IN SECOND GEAR EVERYTIME. IS THERE SOMETHING TO SWITCH IT OVER TO REGULAR MODE AS I'VE READ THAT SOME CARS HAVE A SWITCH FOR WINTER DRIVING, MINE DOES NOT.
IF I MANUALLY SHIFT IT, IT'LL SHIFT FINE. BUT IT WON'T SHIFT ALL THE WAY BACK TO FIRST. IT'LL STOP AT 2ND.

sounds like a bad kickdown switch.
Take it to a good indie mechanic and let him drive it. I bet that's it.
MB's can smoke the tires in 1st so when people say this is "normal" I wonder if they are riding in a POS MB and just don't care

just about all mercedes start off in 2nd gear-don't know how your model works but in mine(89 560 sec) if I shift into 2B I get first gear-not all models have this-sometimes they'll have a W/S switch(winter/summer) 1st gear start for summer-2nd gear start for winter-if you don't have any of these options u can get first gear by just punching the gas

North American 126's all start in 2nd gear for EPA gas guzzler reasons. There are after market switches that electronically control a first gear start all the time. One used to be made by or for a company called BERGWERKS. They are no longer in business but you might find one used. There product was a good unit.

all original transmission made by MB for commercial sales start's with second gear, unless you shift the lever manually down to 1 otherwise it's always two to start the wheel rolling. On S or C switch (sports and comfort) its shifting behavior and nothing to do with shifting from first gear or not. Mine is German Version/Edition
