My 420SEL just died while driving!!!

My 1987 420SEL just died 2day while on the road. good thing it died in the city and not on the freeway or i would of been in trouble.

it all started after i filled up the tank wit gas...after like 10 mins of driving the CD player suddenly shuts off, i was like whats going on...then like 30 seconds later the the RPM meter is just jumping all over the place and i could feel a major power loss while in the car. Good thing i bumped into one of my friends while i pulled on the side of the road to see what the problem was. after getting a quick jump my car seem to be alright after like 10mins the car suddenly dies again..this time died at a stop. then i did another jump and drove like a few blocks and died again. the problem seem like if im not stepping on the gas the car suddenly dies. then my car dies a few more times while trying to get to Firestone. i think i jumped started my car 15-20 times in that 1 hour. at stop lights i had to step on brakes and gas at the same time....after awhile alot of smoke started coming from under the car.... and some guy on the road started screaming at me that my car was on fire...so i quickly come of my car n look underneath...looked like at plastic bag caught on fire under my car or sumthing...after the fire went out i jumped the car again and drove it to Firestone to check the car out. they told me i had to leave it over night cause they were closing when i got there. i'll update yalls on the problem when they give me a call.

Have anyone here had this kind of problem on their 1987 420SEL? or know whats wrong?

Thanks
-Greg

I am not sure, but sounded like your car was struggling for gasoline. Check your fuel delivery system. That's my guess. And I hope you didn't take it to Firestone for services.

My Family knows that Firestone, so we trust them. it turns out the problem with the car was a old alternator...that was why the car would just keep on dying. sounds like there could of been many other problems could of started trying to get my car to Firestone...i hope else broke while getting there. o yea...and my car has 111,705 miles. any chance anyone would know how to turn off the Climate control totally...no air blown...nothing coming out of the vents....thanks

Hello folks.

First post here, after reading this thread I guess I am a little concerned.

Never owned a benz, obviously have heard great things.

I was thinking of buying an 87 420 sel that was advertised in the paper. I was told it has no mechanical problems, only a problem with the air conditioner and the passenger side power window.

It has about 139,000 miles on it. I might be interested in purchasing it, but not if it is going to cost me huge bucks in repairs. Any suggestions on buying an older model like this ? What would you suggest be a fair price from what you know about the car.

Thanks for the help!

The A/C might be big $$$ to repair, especially if the evaporator needs to be repaired. The window should be an easy fix. The motor might be burned out or the regulator is bent or broken.

I don't know what a fair asking price would be. I don't shop much for 126s.

If you really like that car, then call and ask what is wrong with the AC. And if they could tell you what's wrong, then call around to see how much it is to repair. Then decide whether it worths it or not. Good luck.
