Question Considering a 420SEL

I found a 1988 420SEL with 116K miles. I'm going to look the car over this weekend before I decide whether to buy it. The owner has a mechanic friend with a lift, and I will be able to look it over from bottom to top. I would like some pointers on what I should be looking for that is particular to this model.

So far, my research indicates that the condition of the timing chain tensioners is important. How long are they expected to last? Should this have been done to this car already?

Any other information would be appreciated. I don't know much about Mercedes cars, but I'm a reasonably knowledgeable amateur mechanic, having disassembled and reassembled a Corvette in my garage.

The timing chains last a long time, however, the recommended replacement interval is 100K miles. Check if the chain has been converted to the double-row setup. When the engines were released with a single-row chain, they were prone to fail and cause serious engine damage. A double-row retrofit is free of charge (recall campaign).

Check the condition of the suspension, namely bushings. They wear out over time and can affect ride quality.

Good luck!

380 SEL 1982
recall?

are you sure about the recall for the double row conversion?
I have scoured this board and haven't heard anything about it..

that would be great, as I am facing a conversion myself.

don't think it is an issue though for this car, as I understand only 81-83 have the single row chain.

I am very sure this was a recall. I thought the newer models were affected, so check with a dealer to be sure.

I can only offer you some advice as I am a diesel man myself. The most important single thing I can tell you is SERVICE RECORDS. As with any older MB this is important. Look for anything written down or receipts. Even if it is as small as an oil change. At least it shows that someone spent time on the car and cared for it.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't get to spend a lot of time with the owner last weekend, but he did show me the service book, and the original owner seemed to be pretty meticulous. The booklet was filled out and stamped on a regular basis. Don't know whether the timing chain/upper guides/tensioners have been done, though. I'm going to find out tomorrow.

86 420 SEL
The double row chains were not an issue in 86 and up cars. After 1985, double row chains were installed at the factory. The tensioners and guides are more of an issue than the chain, although it is a good idea to change all at each 100K interval. It maintained, these cars are fairly bullet proof.
