Talking New Here (Hi boys!) & have questions

I'm looking to buy and older Mercedes S-class Diesel in Florida, and I wanted to know if anyone knew anyone or anywhere (besides the obvious) where I could find one. Of course, I'm looking for a deal, and don't care if it's not perfect. I'm able to work on it and make it perfect! Any advice, suggestions, hellos are welcome.

Welcome, and have you tried eBay Motors yet? How about sites like Carsdirect, Autobytel, Autoweb...etc?

Yes. I tried Ebay, autotrader.com, msn autos thingamajiggie, etc, but I'm looking for a private seller, not a dealer. I really don't feel like getting raped by a dealer, especially since I'm a chick, and they always seen to think I'm a HUGE sucker and I'm going to pay whatever ridiculous price they give me.

Hmm, then you just have to keep your eyes open. You might find one when you least expected. Good luck in your hunt. Yeah, I wouldn't go to the dealer. All they want is your money for little.

I found a potential car. 1980 300 SD. Great price, seems like a nice car. I looked at it today, and get to test drive tomorrow. Needs body work, but seems ok, for the price they want. Some bubbling, and it used to have a sunroof, but they welded shut, which is a shame.

Anything I should know about this car? I'm googling info right now, but finding info on cars via google is like finding a needle in a haystack.

300sd

This car your mentioning could turn into a money pit if your not careful. Being that the sunroof is welded shut would make me stay away from it. I have seen and driven many 300 SD's and i can tell you that the ones that have not been kept up will disappoint you. Here are some examples of what you might find wrong with these cars in general.

Windows dont go up and down, door locks do not work, air conditioning issues, vents not opening and closing correctly, cracked dash and falling apart interior, brakes needing work and many oil leaks. Also rear end problems and the list goes on. Dont let me stop you from buying what you like, but be prepared to open your wallet and i mean wide open.

This car I'm going to be using as a guinea pig of sorts, so I'm not looking to spend a lot of money. I'm going to convert it to run vegetable oil as well as diesel (greasecar.com for info). I know MB builds a solid car, and I want to make sure that any problems I run into aren't from the car, but from the experiment. If it works, and ends up being more affordable then regular ol' diesel, I'll upgrade to something nicer. I don't really care too much about the body. As long as it's nice, and not full of holes, I should be fine. I just need a solid engine.

Warning a 1980 would be a W116! Great cars but they rust! Rust is like an iceberg you only see the tip of it. Body work cost more then engine work I would pay for a clean body and interior.

Actually there's no need for experimentation, several people have run these engines with veggie oil already, with minimal problems. you are better off buying a diesel that you actually want, since you'll have trouble reselling this car after running grease (not enough people know about it).

And farooq, restaurants will almost pay you to take away the grease, that's why it's such a great deal. Other than motor oil and a little bit of diesel, you can run the car almost for free.
