Type of Power Steering Fluid for 500SEL

I have an '84 500SEL. Can anyone tell me what power steering fluid I need use? Are the brand name power steering fluids for GM, Toyota, Honda, Ford ok or do I need a special grade/type? Thanks

I'd love to use a Mercedes brand but the closest dealer is about 40-50 miles away.

As for the ATF, any particular type or brand? Dexron II, III? Another?????

Warning do not use ATF!!!! When the manual's for these cars were written ATF was very different than it is today. If you do use ATF leaks will probably start. Go to Autozone and buy regualer PS fluid. Or the dealer will sell you the official MB stuff for $10. Grab a filter while your their and change it if it hasn't been done in awhile.

Oops, already put in some Dexron II in there. To be fair although I don't have a repair manual for my Benz but I did go to AutoZone and while they didn't have any manuals for an '84, they did have one for the '77-81 S-class cars, and it said use Dexron II ATF for the power steering reservoir.

I hope it doesn't start leaking. I suppose if it does I can bear it as long as the Dexron won't damage my ps system.

Flush it, the fluid is probably old anyway. When was the filter last changed?

How do you flush it? Is there a dran nut/pet**** somewhere to drain the system? (I really don't have the money right now to go to a seervice station and have them power flugh it like they do with transmissions). As for the filter, not sure when it was last changed. I bought the car about 7 months ago and only put about 3,000 miles on it. I did change the usual stuff on it (plugs, coolant and engine oil/filter though as soon as I bought it).

Their is a flush procedure but I don't know it off the top of my head. Go to Mercedesshop.com and do a search it is in the archives.

You can just keep sucking the fluid out of the pump with a baster. The filter is under $5 and no one seems to know it's in their.

Where would I even get the filter? When I was doing my engine oil/oil filter/air filter/tuneup after I first bought the car the only items I found were the oil and air filters. There was no listings in any of the Fram/STP books (at AutoZone I think) for the power steering filter, nor for fuel filters or any other similar items.

First don't use any filters from Autozone on a MB. Fram belongs on cheap cars not MB. Buy quality German filters only, Bosch, Mann, Hegnst (sp?). Any good online retailer should have the PS filter. I got mine from the dealer last time and it was only a few bucks.
