New W126: 500SEL newbie questions.

I recently acquired a '85 500SEL.... I'm not new to MB's, but this is my first W126. I do quite a bit of DIY.

1st question:
None of my other MB's have the automatic climate controls. Can someone please tell me what the buttons do:
O = OFF
EC = compressor off
Black Arrow/White Arrow = ??
White Arrow/White Arrow = ??

The fan switches... Three positions.. High, Automatic, Low. ?

2nd question
Regarding to the power reclining rear seat. Mine only moves the Left Side, with the Right Side remaining in place. How do I remove the rear seat to check what's underneath? What do you expect that I'll see? Burned motors? Cut Cables?

There are more.. but I'll start with these two first. :p

White arrow pointing down, air flow would come out from lower area.

White arrows up and down, both from top and lower area.

Fan speed: Low, Auto, High.

Did you mean the driver seat and the passenger seat? One of the seats is not moving no matter what you do with the switch on the door?

Check the switch on the door to see if it's disconnected behind it. If not, then the control unit under the seat to see if all are connected. Just be prepared you might need a new seat control unit.

Hi. Thanks for your reply.

> Did you mean the driver seat and the passenger seat?

No, I meant the REAR bench seat. It would only move on one side.

Okay, did you mean only one side of the switch is able to move it? Which ever side button is not working, make sure it's slapped into place tight. If it's loosed, like people slaming the door shut all the time, it would come loosed. Make sure all your connections are in placed. When mine go loosed mainly on the passenger side, the control over the door would not work. Push it back in, it would fix it.

Since it's a bench seat, I am not sure what you meant by only one side moves..

both switches on the rear doors are ok... either switch would make the seat move.

EXCEPT only the left side of the seat cushion would slide back or forward. The right side of the seat cushion stays in place.

Yes, pretty weird sight. Imagine the rear seat going diagonal.

If I remember correctly, the rear bench seat is one big piece. So I cannot understand how yours locked on one side. Did you have anything got stuck there stopping it from moving? Well, you might as well remove the seat bottom to take a good look. Unbolt the nuts near the floor I think. Good luck.

Keep the climate control in EC unless you want the AC compressor to be engaged.

500 SEL
My 500 SEL had the same issue with the rear seat recline. The issue is easy to fix. Use this link to get the details.... works like a charm

https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w126/87227-rear-seat-recline.html

I found that the cable that drives the seat reclining gears had disengaged on one side -- rendering that side frozen. The square shaped cable (inside the cable housing) had pulled back and nolonger was making contact with the gear assembly. Once I pulled the cable forward -- reinserted into the gear it worked great. Just be sure to align both sides of the seat rails before you reinstall the bench. It might be a good idea to hit the rails with some grease while you have it a part.
