Pesky problem w/power door closers on '96 S420

Every few days or so, my power door assist system quits working. It will work again after I pull/re-insert trunk fuse #9 for another day or so, then quits again. Any clues on this? THANKS.

they say its a sign that the power assist pump is going.
pulling the fuse just resets the pump, but wont last long. my 94 S420 use to do the same thing, i think the pump is $600 - $800.
good luck

When it stopped working again today, I noticed that only the driver's door quit working. All the rest still worked. I reset the pump as before and the driver's door worked again. Wierd.

Is this an electrical problem with the pump brain?

a Few Nice cars.
Sura...Congrats on the Door Assist pump problem..YOU are TRUELY enjoying your w140 now!!!..all kidding aside this is ONE of the most problematic things that happen to the W140..you can buy a new pump but it will go out again..MAIN Problem with these pumps is the Doors on the W140 are VERY Heavy and needs ALOT of pressure to close them with the pump, thus straining the PUMP and killing it DOA...good luck man!

There are sophisticated electronics in the pump control circuit that "remember" how many times the pump struggles to close a door. If the pump reaches its time limit of operation, it shuts off. If it does this twice for any door or the trunk, it won't operate that door (or the trunk) anymore. It is possible to adjust the pump pressure shut off switch, and this sometimes cures the problem. Read this...

sura, your pump is fine. You just need to adjust its shut-off pressure.

At least, that's my armchair diagnosis without being able to touch your car. There is possibly a very small leak in your driver's door line somewhere, but most likely, all you will have to do is adjust the shut-off pressure, and you will have many years more of trouble free operation.

Read my article at pcmaher's v12uberalles web site.

Thanks so much to those who responded and especially to Brett S.D. for the excellent write-up. I did the pressure adjustment - took about 15 minutes! If its still working in a couple of days, we'll call it a success.

UPDATE: Pesky problem w/power door closers on '96 S420

It's been several days now and the system is still working. I'd say the pump adjustment is the definitive solution to this pesky problem. Thanks all.

If I had $20 for every time I've heard that... Glad it seems to have worked for you. 1 year and my system works all the time, every time.
