The Shivering Benz

Off the top of yall heads, would yall happen to know why all of a sudden my 94 S320 starts to shake at a stop wile the gear is in drive and the brake pedal is pressed. If i put the car in park it no longer shakes, it feels like the car is vibrating. This happens with the A/C being on or off!! Any ideas!! yall are appreciated!

A few
I really don't know, but this post sounds like a really bad Southern prohibition-era movie.

Motor mounts is my guess. When you put the car in park or neutral, the drivetrain will 'relax' and stop vibrating against the body.

I stopped at a local authorized Mercedes rapair shop and that is exactly what they told me, that the motor mounts were out! Is that something that I could put in myself, they wanted 600-800 dollars to replace these. Another thought I had was that the car needed a tuneup but I was told that there are no tuneups on our cars instead they are A service and B services. If so, which one should I go with for this problem? Appreciate the input!

The A and B services are not meant to cure a rough idle and I doubt they would solve the problem you have indicated. These are just regularly scheduled maintenance.

I would check/replace the motor mounts and go from there. If they are not collapsed when you check them, then you may have a more serious issue like an engine wiring harness in need of replacement.

I may be incorrect on this but replacing the mounts on a 104 engine like yours is fairly straightforward. They run about $200 in the aftermarket for a pair or you can check eBay.

Just a note about aftermarket mounts, go for the OEM if possible. There is a few guys on BW that got cheaper ones and they don't last very long at all.

Good point NZ, I had heard this about other components, I guess it makes sense for the rubber stuff all around. I called my bud at the dealer and he mentioned that some of the aftermarket mounts are not liquid-filled as the original mounts are.

Ok, I will check on those OEM mounts.

Now if they are gone what happens if I dont replace them would it damage my engine after a while. I hardly ever drive on a side of town with bumpy streets! Also, what makes you guess it is the engine mounts and not a problem with the engine?

You think it could be a problem with the fuel air mix when the car is at idle. If that was the problem I would expect giving it a bit on the gas would cure the problem. If that is what is happening it should feel like the car is missing on some cylinders.

The reason why it sounds like engine mounts is because when it is in park and the drivetrain is not engaged there is no movement in the car.

Concur with NZ, also, the mounts are known to cause this symptom. If you can confirm that the car has at least 60-70k miles on the current set, I would say that it makes the mounts most likely the problem.
