Rate the S-class for presence?
W126, W140, W220 and W221 have presence in different ways.
W126 looked very "majestic" in appearance. W140 looked very "grand" The
W220 had more of a refined, sweet, smooth look which definetly was a departure from the W140. The W221 totally goes back to the aggressive, "STANCE" look. It most resembles the W140 in its sheer GIRTH, but not in that "fat" way.
Its so hard to get the right words, but those of you that know these cars know exactly what I mean.
When you look in your rear view Mirror, only the W140 and W221 basically SHOUT at you to get the F out the way, while the W126 and W220 politely tell you that you are not as good as them, so won't you be so kind as to move over to let me pass............. he he

I consider the W140 to be the last great MB but I don't think it has the presence it once did. I categorize S-class's very much like Chucky said.
The real question should be: If you were holding the keys to a W126, W140, W220 and W221, which one would you take?

w140 is a cult classic and will remain that way forever. You can buy a nice one in low 20s but only true w140 and merc lovers will buy those cars, not anyone who can afford 20 grand. So when you have a w140, people will know, you purposely , lovingly bought that car. not because it was the best choice for the money you paid.
I dont think w126 is considered a cult classic , at least not as much as w140. But again, you have an image with this car. it tells people a lot about you when they see you driving it.
well, W220 is in my opinion the best choice for the money. they depriciated big time. for 40-50grand, there is no car that can give you that much luxuary, performance, classy look etc... I think anyone who is looking for a good car may consider these cars for the best value.
I would love a MY1999(only 15 in USA) S600 for my garage for its collection aspect and MY2007 S600 for my daily driver for its comfy ride and make-life- easier aspects(i.e distronic plus, nightvision, navigation system, voice command etc..).

I remember many years ago when the W140 was in its 2nd or 3rd year of production, we were driving on the highway and we were overtaken by a W140. My mother, who still can't recognize her own car at a parking lot (she only knows it's graphite gray and the license plate numbers) jumped on her seat and said THAT is the car I want. I asked her what car was that, just to know how much impact it has caused on her, and she immediatley answered, it's an MB, of course :P
