I just bought a 1996 S600 with 125,000 miles, it was riding a little hard in the *** end and just replaced the rear accumulators about $100 each, one on each side. It cost $200 to install the pair. Not so bad on the repairs so far. I must say the car is quite a blast to drive it really gets up and goes right?
By the way the rear shocks on my car are still alright thank god because I understand they are very expensive. Tell me what you have found out about these cars I have only owned mine now for 2 weeks. So Long

I love my S320 and all, but the dream is a V12 S Class in my driveway.

Look for Upper and Lower Control Arms, Sway Bar Bushings, Lower Ball Joints, Shocks (if not replaced yet), for sure Motor Mounts, Rear Accumulators, Sway Bar Links, Belt Tensioner, Spark Plugs, Flex Disc, Spark Plug Wires, Idler Arm Bushings, steering damper If you have not replaced yet, you will.

Make sure to drain and fill brake fluid, coolant. Change Differential Fluid.
Never let anyone "flush tranny" or flush anything else, it will cause more harm than good and only paddens our wallets. But fluid drain and fill can prevent alot of problems in the future.

These are heavy cars, parts wear out by 100k..I see it everyday at work. FYI- If you can feel the car vibrate (at all) when stopped or with the AC on, you need motor mounts...you should have to look at the rpms to verify the car is actually running if mounts are good, they are most always bad.

Thanks for the heads up! I am going to look at a '99 S600 with 45k miles. Got some years to it but the miles are very low and I may be able to purchase for $20-22k. It's represented to be in excellent condition and probably is. I can't take it to a mechanic I know since it's 500 mi away. So, is there anything else I should check or any way of verifying the conditions you mentioned. I can do the visuals and the idle check is great advice and easy. Let me know please. Thanks.

I don't know why some people keep posting this because it's simply not true there are some items that the V12 has 2 of and the engine is harder to work round because of the space or lack of space in the engine bay aside from that all the systems in the 600 are the same as any other W140.

i wouldnt worry about it. my s600 has ~80,000 miles and its perfect. my s320 however gaveme problems since it had 50,000 miles..but not too bad though, i mean i still have it and it has 150k miles.
