FYI Easy Extra 5-15 Horsepower

I hope you guys have heard about this already. Ive done it to both my Cl600 and my S500 Sedan. If you open your hood and look where the Air inlet pipes are for your Intake, Youll see on each side there is a Factory black plastic peice covering the Air Intake. These are used to restrict airflow and detune the mercedes benz Hp. Use a Dremmel and cut out the plastic piece around the intake and your set to go.

Any questions let me know. Sam

I believe that is the air silencer. You should also get a throatier sound at higher rpms. My friend and I did this modification to his 2003 Mustang Cobra and it made a big difference.

G its very simple, In front of the intake holes right behind the grill there is a plastic piece on each side infront of the holes for the intake. follow those two pipes out to the front of the car. Its behind the hood and in front of the grill. Its very simple. And i would recommend taking the plastic intake pipes off either. Also if you have a sedan there is plastic covers in the corners touching the back of the grill. I cut those also. I will post pics soon. Sam

Is the hp boost really noticeable, or is it the "throaty"sound that makes you think the car has more power? How much louder is it?

Its not any louder. Your just letting more forceable air into your intake. More air will give you more power. More power you have the more gain in HP youll get. I have a V12 so im gonna gain a lot more from getting more air into a 6.0 then an 3.2.

Have you been able to verify the HP gain? Dyno test or performance difference - acceleration, etc...? I'd like to know I'm really going to get some gain if I'm going to cut parts off my car - even under the hood.

LOL. There is not a more throaty sound. You just get increased air into the engine. It doesnt really change the exhaust sound. Ive known this mod for years before i even had a W140. Ive read it in several performance magazines from Europe. Its not a huge difference but it helps. Ive noticed more initial response the incease in acceleration. Its more responsive when you step on it. Sam

I dont have any evidence of the HP gain from a dyno. Maybe i can scrounge up the old magazines. Its an option if you want to do it. I have a $130,000 Cl600 with lorizer kit on mine and i did it the day i got my car. The mod is very simple and its just cutting off a corner of plastic. If that type of thing scares you, i suggest not doing it. I have a supra, and have torn down every part of the car. So this mod was a no brainer to me.

I wonder if there are any emission consequences logged and stored to OBDII because of the excess air entering the engine. The balance of the emissions may be disrupted at times. Mod's like this worked better before computer controlled emissions control systems that senses all and any changes to the internal engine air flow and temp. This mod could have undesirable effects. Here in GA you cannot get your auto tag if you have any emission related computer controlled trouble codes logged on OBDII, until they are cleared and proof of the fixed. Keep the plugs should you have to replace them...

This was a quote from another member in the post your picture topic, page 2:
{Quote}
"I regret modifying the air intakes as posted here on the forums, because in hard rain, it let water into my engine which abruptly caused the car to stall and left me stranded along with wife and kids. I promptly fixed the problem, with a lot of cash and heartache. Made me sick, and scared. I thought the car was dead and would have to be totalled. I cannot afford $35,000 US for a new engine."

No Thanks to this mod...
