1996 S500 Tranny Slipping

Hey guys,

I have a 1996 S500 with relatively high mileage. Just recently the tranny starting slipping & I figured it's probably time to replace it.

Do you guys know where I can get a hold of used, but in good condition transmission for this car? (without going to the shop first)

Any help is appreciated!

You can get a rebuilt transmission from adsitco.

480,000 Miles???? I think you hold the record for most mileage on one of these. You must be running out of grill to put the mileage badges on.

Well the car is meant for driving!

Even at 480k miles, the car still drives like a dream.

I'll definitely take pics for you guys as soon as the stormy weather passes

Besides my reply

to your pm.For general forum info always watch the rebuilders core charge policies. Most are like apartment deposits, you never get them back because they don't want cores with bad pinions, burnt gears,or damage to the planetarys.Which at nearly 500k you most likely have one or more of these items shot.

WOW! 480K miles! That's impressive.

A buddy of mine just bought a 98 W140 with 118K miles. Now I gotta show him this thread as his car is barely broken in. Good luck with it!

Good news! The tranny actually doesn't have to be replaced.
My mechanic found that the transmission fluid was leaking and there was practically no fluid in the tranny, so the car is getting fixed right now.

Thanks

Miles are just a number, it should not frighten people, as long as you treat the car well, it will do its job in return. I bought the W140 back in 2001/2002 with almost 100k miles.

That is impressive mileage man. Yeah Benz transmission usually slip because of low ATF fluids. Just check your stuff every few weeks to be sure. Dump some Auto RX in there and clean it out if it got emptied out from leaking. Just in case gunk formed in there. Drive it for a few thousand miles and then empty out the fluids again. You should be good to go after that.

You got he car at around 100k, so in the 380k you have put on how much would you say you have spent on her (or what have you had done) to keep it in good running shape?

Cant wait to see pics!
