CD Changer questions

I just purchased a 1993 300SE and would like to add a CD changer, however I do not want to pay the dealer $1000 to do so. Does anybody have any suggestions for compatible CD changers or where I can get one of the ourginal (10 disc?) CD changers for this car?

The original 10 disc CD changer was a Becker 980 that is no longer made.

However it is possible to use an Alpine cmh-s630 cd changer and a translator so the cable pre-wired in the car can already connect to the changer.

Now here is info regarding the translator, I am not entirely sure on all of it:
Q-6-82-0135 -- software interface $135;
Q-6-82-0174 -- adapter harness $50;
Q-6-82-0175 -- cable set $98;
Alpine CHMS630 CD Changer
Peripheral adapter MBZALP9 $37

Those would be all the things you need for it. The first 3 are available from parts shop at mercedessop.com. The CD changer can be had from http://www.proactiveelectronics.com/AKCHMS630
and the peripheral adapter from http://www.autosoundgear.com/

Regarding the Alpine model you suggested, CHM-S630, Alpine also offers an upgraded model, CHM-S634. Do you know if the s634 is compatible? The only differences are the ability to play MP3s and display the CD title. I really don't care about the CD title, but playing MP3s would be a great addition?

Also, if you do a search on google.com (i.e. just type "Alpine CHM S630") you will find it much cheaper than the link in the prior post.

Thanks in advance for your reply to my question!

I got the info from SCJLA at mercedesshop.com. He's a member over there in the audio forum. It's possible that it might work, but then again it might not. To be sure you could go over and post in the original thread. Search for W140 changer.

Happy to report that SCJLA responed to my question at mercedeshop and his answer is yes. The CHM S634 is compatible to the OEM head unit.

Does this mean if I buy that unit, that I do not need all those adapters?

According to SCJLA, if I am reading it correctly, you need to buy two additional adapters.

I found the perfect solution. I bought a CD player for $26 at Wal Mart and used my cassette adapter, and surprisingly it sounds good. problem solved.

Yes that is probably the cheapest alternative.

The Alpine S634 plays MP3's, CD's and most importatant, it works seemlessly through your stock headunit according to SCJLA.

The changer certainly supports all the data tags, but unlikely the OEM head unit can handle it.

I swapped my entire stock system for Alpine (7998 head unit, S634 changer, F450 amp, new speakers all around - 3-way components in front and 12" sub in trunk) and am very happy with it. Much better than stock in my opinion.

Gotta have quality tunes to match a quality car!

Cheers!

i am also interested in finding out if an LCD screen would fit fine in the empty phone area in front center dash?
