New wheels for the S600

Just when I was about to sell my 1998 S600, I realized how rare and beautiful this machine is. I have decided to keep the car and just purchased a nice present to brighten it up a little. I purchased 2003 Mercedes S55 AMG wheel and tire take-offs from my dealership. They only had 9 miles on the set. I am picking them up this afternoon and had a couple questions. Can I use the OEM wheel bolts from my stock wheels on the AMGs? Both wheels are the same offset, just different width. Also, does anyone know what the proper torque setting is for our wheel bolts? Thanks for the help/info. I will post pictures soon. They are 18X8.5 front and 18X9.5 rear, it should look great!

You can definitely use the OEM lugs. I put '02 AMGs on my 98 CL - same sizes as yours - and used the original lugs.

The Wheels are on!!! They are wrapped in Dunlop SP9000 A Y-Rated tires. The car handles amazing and looks even better. I am glad I didn't sell it!! Time to save up for the RennTech exhaust

I am considering to upgrade my S500 coupe wheels to 17 or 18". But I wonder if that would affect the ride comfort. What do you think?

When I switched I noticed a minor loss in ride comfort and a bit more tire noise especially as the tires wear down, but for me it was worth it for the increased performance and looks.

Do you have the 18"? And what tires do you use?

Just like leloz, I have 18x8.5 front and 18x9.5 rear. I've run Bridgestone Potenza SO3s, Goodyear F1 GS-D3s and Dunlop 9000s. The Bridgestone's were the best performers but very soft and wore out really quickly and I'm not a really aggressive driver. The Goodyear's and the Dunlop's seem to be a better balance between performance and wear for me.

You can get a lot more info about the tires at www.tirerack.com

Thank you for the comments!! Ride comfort is almost the same (until you hit poor roads, then you feel it more). I think it makes a positive difference overall (looks, handling, and ride).

sorry to dig this out of the grave. how much did you buy the rims for?

I found a deal on the exact same set of authentic AMG wheels with tires (2 new, 2 worn) for only $1000. do you think its worth it? Let me know. thanks

OH,

If they're in good condition then it sounds like a good deal. The wheels run about $450 each new and the tires, depending on what you got, between $150 and $200 - so a grand for the whole package isn't too bad.

If you're buying from a private seller, you can probably push even harder on the price.

Let us know what you do and post some pics if you get 'em.

Wow! Tight car! I should tell my dad to put 18 inchers on the 600SEL. My uncles R129 has these SL wheels and they are soooooo nice!
