W140 stereo wiring
hi everyone.
is there a diagram posted somewhere ( i searched but couldnt find any) that explains how to wire an aftermarket deck so it can work in sync with the factory amps/ cd changer, etc...
its a 93 500, so its not the becker radio... its the other one where the volume key is not a round knob but rather a button that you can push up/down
thx

ok, i did some more searching and found a part number (PC 2-11-4), and i did a google search on it...there are companies in UK that seem to sell it but no one on this side of the pond seems to carry it (i even checked crutchfield)
the site in UK that carries says it fits the factory harness and the other side is ISO..whatever that is...this is a picture of it:
190 Series - Sep 93 > Oct 93
200, 220, 230, 250, 280, 300, 320 (Saloon / Estate) - Aug 85 > Aug 93
CE(Cabriolet/Coupe) - Oct 87 > Aug 93
G-Wagen (Est) - Jan 82 > Aug 93
S-Class (Saloon) - Aug 86 > Aug 93
SEC - Aug 86 > Oct 91
SL (Convertible) - Aug 86 > Aug 93
now the only adaptor available from crutchfield looks like this:
but crutchfield does not specify what MB models this harness fits.
So now, I have 2 different looking harnesses, and dont know which one to choose from.
is there anything out there that will fit the car harness side of the older decks with the push up/down vol buttons)... while having bare ends on the other side like shown in the crutchfiled picture?
this is how my deck looks like:
Pls help I am sure some one out there knows
Thanks in advance
Thanks in advance

Your stereo sure looks different from ours here in the State. If all else failed, you could remove the radio and do not unplug anything to take a good look on the back to compare. Otherwise, I think most highend audio stores might have the harness you need. Not sure though.

Aren't the 93s pre-wired for the CD-changer in the trunk? Since MB didn't went to fibre-optic yet, it should not be hard to install the changer.
That system is used in all pre-94.5 cars I believe, standard issue in both Canada and US.

exactly, that deck is used on all US/ Cdn spec cars on 92-93 model years and on most W124 (pre 92 S class cars), I have even seen it on late 80's, early 90's E class as well...
now, going by all of your suggestions... how do i remove this unit? i have looked and looked by unlike japanese cars, it doesnt look like there is any type of a panel i can pry open, or screws i can undo... any tips?
thanks

I dont think it will work
I tried to upgrade my head unit only in my 92 300se and it turned out not possible. Because of the factory bose amp and the odd ohm rating of the speakers my shop said it would not work out. I ended up changing my head unit, speakers and amps. I am very pleased with it as the car has great sq.

Hey, I used to work at Stereo Warehouse, and the general rule of thumb there is, if you have Bose, you have to buy everything. We would wire around the stock amps and run new ones or off deck power, but since we have 12 speakers, thats not happening :-). And 7 amps in the stock system? Nah, those are coming out too... I'd suggest buying some good quality stuff, like an Eclipse or Alpine head unit, and very nice speakers, like Moral, OZ, the new JBL stuff, or Image Dynamics. Also invest in a nice amp like a Zapco (the best), Memphis, Alpine, or JBL. I can get any of that stuff for you guys if you want it, just drop me an email.

I have heard it IS possible to use aftermarket headunit its just you have to take it to a very high end stereo place that knows what they are doing. Supposedly there is one in houston that can do it. I will keep yall updated. thanks

har har - in europe / the UK all stereos must have a standard socket - the ISO.
(ISO stands for the international standards organisation - then there is a number for the type of socket - dunno what it is...)
literally thirty seconds to replace a stereo - if you dont include removing the cage.
do a search for a thread called "the mirror is loose" - not sure if its this forum or mbnz.org w140 or mercedesclub uk
