car creaks like crazy

ive just noticed that when ever there is a load going into my car it creaks like crazy.

i don't weigh much, just 175lbs and when i get into the car sure enough the car will creak when i sit.

what could be causing the creaking? is it just the springs getting old? i have about 75,000 miles on the 98 now. or is it something like a control arm or something. anyone got any ideas?

Could be ball joints.

i have the same problem in my w202. It recently started creaking when coming to a stop or starting gently at a stoplight...as well as sometimes when i get out and in.

sa said 9 out of 10 times it's the balljoints which my right one is already wearing out...but i'm in on wed for an oil change and he's going to check out the ball joints to see if they are in need of repair (est $400, worst $500 for the front left and right)

i'll let you know what he says and if i don't get the creaking noise anymore from what is fixed.

creeking

I am wondering why the noise is only accuring when you get in and out? You would think if it was ball joints that it would happen when you run over any uneven surface, such as up or down a ramp and so on. What happens if you just push down on the hood to make the car bounce??

it is when ever there is a load on the car it will make creaking sounds. even if i put a 50 lb bag of rice in the trunk the car will creak.

squeaking

one thing to keep in mind, is that on these cars the "A" frames/multilink suspension are attached to the car using rubber grommets to isolate the road vibrations from the frame. these eventualy wear out and have to be replaced.
There are threads discussing this issue.

When I brought it in for my oil change and check this...they couldn't reproduce the sound, of course the car won't cooperate when it's in the shop. So they told me to bring it back when it was acting up and I did so the other day. I was passing by and figured I'd go in and have them look.

Spent about 15 minutes out in the parking lot driving around braking and going because that's when it produces the sound, going off the line or coming to a stop. They brought it in and lifted it up. Came back 10 minutes later...ball joints (primarily my front right one is more worn). They said it's not a danger to drive, just more of a annoyance. So I'm planning to replace the front ball joints next oil change...quoted about $325 for the front set.

Thank you GDawg,
I took mine to a local as well, and he said its the joints. Charging me about $450 for the 2 front ones. Quick question, he said its not a danger to drive? i thought if the joints break your car will kind of lie on the street like a horse without legs. Pls explain. Also, does your car makes like awful noise when you brake or move?

I think what he meant was in my case, they were startin to wear and to the point of making the noise, but they weren't in danger of breaking on me (i'm not at that level of worn out yet). But yeah, if they do break, u can't drive.

You should ask your mechanic how bad was it when he looked. Should be fine for a little while longer if it's starting to wear out.

Yeah, mine makes a "creaking/groaning" noise when coming to a stop and starting from stop. It's kinda like the Titanic boat when it's about to sink, that kind of groaning/creaking noise.
