i buy my filter from the dealer... OEM stuff.. and use 20w50 valvoline or castrol gtx.. 5.0 engine takes 10 quarts... 4.2 should be similar, although consult your owner's manual to be sure

I use Shell Synthetic 5W-40. If it's good enough to go into a Ferrari, then it's good enough for my Benz. Benefit is Cost. I can get a gallon jug for 13 USD, versus about $18 for Castrol 5W-50, or Mobil 5W-30. I would choose any one of those.

a synthetic 5W-30, or 10W-30 would be best. there is an actually difference between oil weights. a 10W-30 will allow the motor to rev more freely and the motor will seem peppier than with say a 20W-50. and since its synthetic, you don't have to worry about protection. It may not add up to actual extra HP on the dyno but it definately dose make a difference in terms of the characteristics of the motor.

Mercedes does NOT recommend using 5W-30 or 10W-30 Mobil 1 anymore since the 30 weight Mobil 1 oils now use a petroleum base.

Look here and scan down.

http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html

Use either 0W-40 or 15W-50 Mobil 1. This business about light weight oils providing better fuel economy is something that car manufacturers have been telling us to justify them recommending low viscosity oils to help them with their CAFE averages. In practice, you won't see much difference. There's no question that the heavier weight oils provide better viscosity under severe conditions than the lighter weight oils.

15W-50 Mobil 1 has the same pour point as a 10W-50 dino oil and about what the petroleum based 10W-30 Mobil 1 has now.

The 15W-50 Mobil 1 has more anti-wear additives than the 0W-40 which are supposed to be harder on catalytic converters but the amount of zinc in it isn't going to hurt the cats.

I've been using 15W-50 in my cars for a long time and have experienced no noticable oil consumption using it.

mobile 1 10w-30 is all the protection you need in the world. Mobile 1 is the most pure of all motor oils (redline is almost identical). I have seen numerous indepth oil tests and mobile 1 outperforms everything and has the highest flash points and etc. 10W-30 will do just fine.

Read my post above! Follow the link I provided! The 30 weight Mobil 1 oils are no longer true synthetics and Mercedes no longer approves of them. In fact, they've told their dealers not to use them.

I agree that Mobil 1 should be used but not the 30 weight viscosities. Use either 0W-40 or 15W-50. These are true PAQ based synthetics.

The 30 weights are Base III oils made from petroleum bases.

And Redline is not *almost identical*. Redline is a Base V oil which can stand the temperatures of jet engines. The petroleum and PAQ based oils of Mobil 1 will not.
