Is the w140 reliable?
I am sure this question has been asked before, but how reliable are the w140s? I know there are some maintenance hurdles to jump, like the faulty vacuum pumps/vacuum lines, as well as bio-degradable wiring harness, and other things. I had also heard of a transmission issue? At some point I would love to acquire one of these beasts. What is the most reliable model? I definitely don't want the s600. So what are all the common issues? what should I look for? Are there voltage regulators on these cars? Thanks
Also side note, there is a two tone green over tan 400 sel that I know of. I know very little about the car, other than that it has been sitting for years. possibly a decade. it does appear to move every once in a while though. Would this seem like a good buy? Or does that sound like a total money pit. I looked at it once. It actually looked to be in pristine condition aside from a door panel being removed. I need to learn more about it first, though.

Reliability will be based on the prior owners upkeep and maintenance as the W140 over 20 years old (okay 19 for the '99). If the prior owners have taken care of the car the first gen (prior to '96) would probably have had the wiring harness replaced which should not be an issue. First gen had power rear view mirror, rear telescoping rods for reverse and the sedans had better carpet and leather, and additional horsepower, and rotors (before coli packs). The later models include parktronic sensors, rain sensing windshield wipers, xenon lights, coil packs, and OBDII ports for limited DIY use, etc.

mine is a 95, 5 speed 722.5 trans. Had bar harness but replaced both main engine harness and throttle body...left with the alternator harness but so far its not showing any signs of failure. Had my 95 s320 for almost 2 years now and i daily her with no probl3mo. Just came back from 11 hr non stop road trip from myrtle beach south carolina to NY. Avergaing 80mph no hiccups and full tank of gas made it all the way with 1 fill up. What a beast she is.

140 Cars were a consistent moneymaker back in the day. Lots of systems. Window regulators. Harnesses. Engine mounts. Suspension parts. Cooling system and A/C issues. That said.... I enjoyed my ‘96 140-120. That wonderful snarling bent-12, a Five speed transmission with brakes that were ohhhh too small.
