Planning to buy a 97 w140..TOMORROW!
Im planning to buy a 97 s420. Let me give you the specs on this one:
$17,900
89k miles
Silver ext
black int
small dings and no signs of a new paint job
6 cd changer and all the speakers are working
all windows go up and down smoothly
checked for oil spots and didnt see any
fumes from exhaust seemed normal
clean as hell
Tranny shifts smoothly and I dont have the floor the brakes
Looks like no one sat in the back
Intergrated phone
16inch tires with option to get 19" chrome amg rims w/tires extra 3500! too much i think
quiet as hell on the inside
heated seats work cause it was 9 degrees outside and the car got hot quick!
4 year unlimited mile warranty
All service records since orginal purchase of vehicle. Vechicle was purchased there in 97 and lady traded it in for a w220.
vehicle checked out clean.
Is this a good price or should I offer 15gs with rims? Let me know! I have to see this guy tomorrow and I really like the car! The rims make the car look bigger and sexier!

The 19" AMG's with tires @ 3500$ seem WAY too much for OEM style wheels. I'd turn those down.
Hey, if you get the warrenty, and you know it's legit, I think it sounds like a nice car. But the price IMO is way too high for me for that old of a car. Six years.

As the manager of a Car lot,Your gonna pay around that price(here in Dallas anyway)stay away fromt he AMMG's for that kind of money.your car is worth 22-24k retail,however w140 are not going for retail there going much less a 97 s420 is worth around 15,800-18,000 depending on cond of course. plus if your gonna be financing will be higher then the retail,but again its a Mercedes and will last you a lifetime,if your happy with it and if there hard to find in your area then pick it up..if i was buying it i would buy it for around 13,300-14,200 wholesale. if your in the Dallas area and have OK credit give us a call 817-573-6060 ask for Lee we have direct line to Park Place Mercedes wholesalers. good luck on your choice!

The car
I will be financing this car and a lot of the w140 are going for around that price around here (north NJ) Everything here is up there in price. This wasnt the cheapest 97 w140 around here;it was the one in the best condtion for the price. They had a 99 w140 black/black with 61k and it sold for 23,900. The one I am looking at is in better condition and it has more options.

**** I've seen that same car , I think we have been going to the same dealers therenoreagalx.
The 99 one was at a BMW lot.is that where you saw it ?

nor I just hope your going to be ready for repairs, I see you will be financing. People must you don't understand how much you MUST take care of this baby. This car will want a lot, from a new AC or maybe a new tranny so be ready to put away a few hundred each month just in case.

update
I took the car for a 3 hour test drive on saturday. I drove that sucker right to my mechanic who used to work at Mercedes in the city.( he has his own shop now) We went for a drive, checked the engine, put it on the lift, checked all doo-dads. This process took around 1.5 hrs. He said that car was mechanically sound but that a 100k miles, i will need to do a tune up that will run me around $1600. I did a carfax on it and it came up with an accident involving the right rear fender of the car back in 98. The carfax wasnt specific but it gave the case number so I called the city where it happend and I'm still waiting for an answer from the police department. If they can tell me severity of the accident that will depend if I do buy this car. According to carfax, they dont post anything that was less than $500 in damages. I understand that on a benz a fender-bender would be more costly than a toyo corolla. I offered 15,500 and he said no. I called him and he had a counter offer of 17,000. We will see what happens!!
BTW, the car I was looking at was not a BMW lot, it was in a Benz,BMW,Audi lot.

100k tune up @ $1600??? kinda high,plugs arent that much..unless were talking flushing out fliuds,change hoses,timing chain(i have heard that mercedes w140 really dont need it done @ 100k).man change your plugs,oil,CHECK our fliuds and hoses and depending on the damage severity on that car,becareful. Did you tell the dealer what carfax showed?? thats your nego tool there man,your talking to a Manager of a car lot...ME 
be very careful when you find accident reports on a carfax,,frame damage can be cut off and rewelded..i know we have guys who do it on lexus and sell them like that..so becareful..DONT buy @ $17k on a accident!!!

Since you are in New Jersey, here's a Great place where you can get a use MB at a great price, Rallye Motors in Avenel NJ, 732-326-1400, I bough my S500 this summer with a two year extended warranty. Believe me, you need the warranty, I changed the altenator, the AC compressor and the pollution pump on the car already, but lucky me, I did not have to pay for it as the warranty did cover it.
