2 spark plugs a cyl?

Call me stupid, but I just came across the S430 specifications page on mbusa and it says that the 4.3 liter motor runs 2 spark plugs per cylinder? Does the same go for all w220 S430s? Or only the new ones?

OK. Hi Stupid, (sorry but you said I could call you that! :p )

Seriously, all the M112/113/155 V6 and V8 engines have 2 plugs per cyl. These are found in cars with 32, 320, 43, 50, 500, 55, 600, 65 or SLR on their butts.

What's the reason? I mean, it isn't really increasing efficiency knowing that N/A V6s nowadays produce more hp and tq numbers that my 4.3L lol.

The reason is two fold.
1.) The additional spark plug per cylinder increases the effectiveness of the combustion chamber firing, i.e. enhanced performance and lower emissions.
2.) Those of us who sell spark plugs, sell more of them when we can sell 2 per cylinder. (We also like $20.00 platinum plugs)

Thumbs up

MB is not the only manufaturer who has it. The old Corvette crossfire had it centuries ago. And you would not believe it the MB's S-Class even have 6 or 8 spark coils (one per cylinder) to manage a controlled combustion, and reduce pollution.

Corvettes NEVER had 2 plugs per cylinder, even the Crossfire and the S class does not have 6 or 8 coils per one cylinder.

Where did you get this BS?

Hey my friend, reading and comprehending is the magic thing.

I said 1 coil per cylinder, makes 6 for the S320 and 8 for the S430 and S500, right!!!!!!!!!
secondly the Crossfire was a crossfire because it had 2 sparks per cylinder, way back when in the '80's.
If I recall right this might be one of them:

The Crossfire was called a crossfire because General Motors/Chevrolet Marketing said it was. What it had was 2 Throttle Body Injectors mounted across from each other on an open plenlum manifold with a cross ram base. It was still the same old Chevy 350 with ONE spark plug per cylinder.

As for the MB remark, I wasn't wearing my glasses when I posted.
