S430 1999 80k Miles Airmatic Problem

HI,
Today got in the car and noticed on the dash. STOP, CAR TOO LOW!
The back of the car seems to be very low....I turned ignition off and started it again, pressed the airmatic button and car was rising but just from the front, I turned it off and it lowered, I could hear hissing from the back somewhere........Anyideas??????

The hissing sound might refer to air escaping from the air bags; worst case scenario, they could be punctured. You should have it checked out. Unfortunetely, airmatic repairs can be very expensive.

I have been back out and it seems to be the passenger side rear which is 2 1/2 inchs lower than the rest of the car, the noise is sounding like something is being blown up......

Get thee to thy dealer--quickly. If it is drivable, go slow and don't hit any bumps--that can wreck the struts. If not have it towed, but don't delay.

Mine went down on all fours. It was just the pump, but still cost me about $1k, as I recall.

Are you sure??? Sounds very high, but I really don't know. Ask them to break it down by parts & labor. On an expensive job I have found that they will sometimes negotiate on one or both cost elements.

Where'd you get the car? New Orleans?

Do you have a CarFax on it? Did you run the VIN?

I've had mine for six years and haven't had the problems you have in two months. Bummmmmmmmmmmer.

VIN stands for "vehicle identification number". Type it in here vin check and get the original history of your car.

Hi Jayhawk
Carfax didn't work on my Euro VIN number so I guess its only for U.S. imported vehicles.
Also we had the W220 here in europe from the later part of 1998

Did you try http://www.carfax.com/ ? I thought they did Euro reports, but maybe I'm wrong. I was once...

But I am worried about Nigel and his car. If he didn't run any checks before he bought it, he might really have a problem car--we call them lemons over here. Hope that's not the case.

Don't worry Nigel, I also didn't get one, luckely I have done quite a few years turning wrenches on cars and have found all the jobs quite easy to fix so far. Todate I have done a compleat B service, renewed all the brakes, changed the transmission filter and fluid, Fitted a DVD player and a CD changer, changed all the wheels and tires to 19" AMG split rims, and today I am buisy fitting a removable towing hitch. Next will be a full AMG body kit if I can ever find one at the right price.

I have heard those extended warranties are a losing proposition unless your car virtually blows up, and even then they won't cover most repairs. You should look at you car's problems in prespective--over a number of years. I suspect you just got a bit unlucky w/ all of these problems in the first two months. If I just looked at the week my suspension went, or the COMAND had to be replaced, I would have been very depressed. But over the six years I have owned the car, it has been relatively "problem-free." And I would buy another one in a minute. I get a LOT more pleasure out of it than pain! And you will too!!
