Thumbs up Cat installed free of charge

I took my 2003 s430 to the dealership and told them that my mechanic told me I needed a new Cat and that it is covered under the Clean Air Act. They checked it out and installed a new one free of charge. Thanks again to the members of this board who were helpful with the information that saved me many dollars.

He must be referring to the federally mandated 8yr/80k mile warranty for emissions related equipment on all cars sold in the US.

CATS

Correct. Simply stated. if your Cats are defective within 8 years or 80,000 miles the dealership must replace them on warranty. It does'nt matter whether you are the original owner or not. Do a google search as this law is on the internet.

I'm bringing in my w220 tomorrow to the dealership because I keep getting these misfire codes and I read here in the forums that it can be a possible cat damage. I changed plugs already just to narrow down the problem and since the dealer diagnoses for free, then i see no harm done in bringing it in. Could the cats be bad even without any codes? the car passed smog back in October 2010.
