Suspension, 2 questions, air purge like air noise & Relay location
Hello everyone,
I have a 2001 S500;
1) I notice today that if the car is running and I push down on either of the two front fenders, I hear a “purge” like air noise, coming from some were near the fire wall, at the driver side,
Is this normal?
2) I was going to do preventive maintenance before winter by replacing the Relay (O), but when opening the fuse box at the passenger side, many of the relay are the same, witch one is the one that needs to be replace?
Thank you.

Well OxyJean, shows what you know as I got an e mail from WDraft telling me how much better he feels since he read my hilarious post.

So weird to hear this happen to you..I have an 2001 S430..and had the same problem this week...It started out as a purge noise ..when you hit bumps or the suspension is jolted due to bumps...ect. I put my Mercedes up on my lift to do a rotor and brake pad replacement and as the car was lifting, a bunch of fluid poured out of the bottom of the car by the front right wheel..so I took a look and the diaphragm had seperated from the bottom of the shock absorber assembly...So when I lowered the car the weight would keep it down and allow the airmatic to pump it up...so for a week I drove this way until I noticed that the pump was always running at every stop light and when the car was off the one side kept getting lower and lower..as soon as the car is on it pumps its self up but over time it was lower than the left front by about half an inch...So I had to replace the front shock absorber because it is all one peice with the airmatic...MB wants $1070 list..I got it for $860 with my discount there..install is easy..so if that is the problem, which I bet it is PM me and I can give you instructions on how to replace it...Dont go to long or you will be replacing a compressor to.

As long as your car isn't sitting about 6" lower than normal, I wouldn't worry. I would have the dealer check it though when I went in for my next service.

I thought the same thing as Jayhawk...But it is hard to hear the compressor pumping air with the radio, a/c, and engine running..listen for it at a light..I turned my radio and a/c off and would hear it run..If that doesnt convince you jack the front wheels off the ground and fully extend the shocks..take one wheel off and look at the diaphram of the shock and see if it is seperated..that is more then likely where you are hearing the purge noise come from...Just hate to see you have to replace the air compressor also...just my 2 cents

Thank you, makes sense,
last week I did the break and rotor replacement, and inspection, may be all the lifting might separate the diaphragm on the driver’s side shock absorber.

I bet you thats the problem,too much of a coincidence, I know many people who support the axles when having the car lifted to stop the wheels dangling in space at the end of their travel while in service.I know Range Rovers air system was often broken by incorrect liftng of the cars by grease monkeys that were not familiar with them.
