W220: HELP: 'Low Beam,L, Check Lamp'
Hi,
My 2001 S500(26k) has come up with the above malfunction. I have checked the left headlamp at night and it seems like the blue/white light xenon bulb is not working. (One side shows the blue glow the other side just has a amber dim)
I assume I need to get the bulb changes, is this something I could do?
If not how much should it cost for the stealer (parts/labour)? Or an independent?
Is there anything else it could be?
Thanks
Jig

Normal appearence when the bulbs are burnt out. Best is to replace the pair, since XENON's tend to change light color over time. So to make them look alike (both sides) swap them both. Simple thing for DIY. The price of the bulbs is relatively high at the dealer. But the internet crap is not worth looking at.

I think car lights are not a matter of taste, rather a matter of safety. The higher the color temperature values the "cooler" the looks, for some people. But also the higher color temperature the lower the illumination of the street ahead of you. 10.000K is ultra(violet)bright, but you won't see much of the street any more at night, not to mention any objects on the street (like other people, or so)

A 6000K actual H.I.D. setup is still brighter than any halogen setup which most cars have. I would never run anything higher than a 6000K bulb for the obvious reasons you mentioned. An 8000K H.I.D bulb is as bright as most cars you see on the road with typical halogen low beams. A 6000K Ultinon is brighter than halogen high beams !! It is the 2nd brightest but "coolest" looking bulb on the market. I also like the 4300K's But once you try a Ultinon it is hard to go back. Below are some #'s. and pic's of my ultinons
H.I.D 4300K = 3300 Lumens (low beam)
H.I.D 6000K = 2000 Lumens (low beam)
H.I.D 8000K = 1200 Lumens (low beam)

How easy is it to change the bulbs? Is it easy to remove the fixtures/fittings?, is there any guides/ pictures???

It is very simple to change the hid bulbs.. pull the plastic cap back from behind the light assembly, and pull the square connector off the the hid bulb, The other bulbs can be removed by pilling back the other plastic cap but is tight on space depending on the size of your hand which mine are big. or you can pull the whole light off the car which I have done to replace my old xenon lamps and can be kinda tricky.

Hi Jig, Ive just done a similar job replacing the bulbs in my car, I had the local auto electrician do it for me as I was scared of something happening to the ECU etc if I did it myself, The cost was $40 incl bulbs and labour and the warning light " check lamps " gos away automatically when its finished, however you can remove the warning light / signal at any time by pressing the reset button on the side of the instrument cluster, however everytime you start the car it will re appear

What bulbs would I use to match stock ones on a 2000 S500 that has the better headlights (not sure if they're called the xenons or what)?
Thanks
