2003 S500 - Toyota Corolla (in the rain)
No Updated Headlight

The only updates done to the car were the AMG wheels and the upgraded tail lights. They both came from Mercedes Benz. Everything else is original stock equipment.

No Retrofitted Headlights.

The car was definitely totaled. The fire was so hot it melted the metal on the hood. I contacted Mercedes Benz but no response yet. The only response I recieved so far was a letter telling me I'm entitled to a refund for the instrument cluster I replaced a year or so ago because it went black on me. I have other photos but the one posted sort of gives you an idea as to how bad the front end looked. Inside the car looks perfect. I had considered replacing the headlights but heard too many stories about problems with the replacements. That party isn't over. the car was always serviced by the local MB dealer. Last service was in June 06 with a complete tuneup. Everytime that little A service or B service interval came up I was at the Benz dealer. It will be interesting to see what kind of response I get from a service area loaded with customers.

1. did you have retrofit lights at the front? Were they done by a Merc dealer??
2. Was the car a total write off or can it be put back together again?
3. Have you tried phoning and e-mailing MBUSA or getting your local dealer to do that. My dealer would be straight on the phone to Mercedes and get an answer in one day. But i always service with Mercedes dealers.
4. Are you getting another 220 series. I hope so. Much better looking than the new one.
All best wishes.

Unless you can prove mechanical defect caused the fire, don't expect MB to do anything. Thats why we get insurance. Sorry man.

I'd still like to know if you have a car ("medical") examiner who can diagnose what really happened and why? I think all of us S-owners want to know much more about this disaster. PLEASE keep us informed.

Feedback From Mercedes

Well the only response I got from MB was that "it wasn't a problem with the car". However, I got a recall letter from Mercedes several months ago stating that the brake line could overheat and cause a fire. I find this very interesting.

Unhappy

I don't think Mercedes cares about material losses, as long as nobody was injured they seem to wash their hands of these incendiary vehicles.

It happens

And all to often. I saw this 3 times when I was in houston and once in front of one of my stores. I was a DM for circuit city and the guy walked inside. The car started burning. Guy came outside looked at his car, then walked back inside and finish his purchase. Wife came and picked him up in a 760li and his only words about the car was "well, im done with mercedes". I always wondered what caused this. I took a picture when it happen

p.s. My Range next to it. Miss that truck

Looks like it started in the engine compartment, so I'd guess some kind of fuel ignition issue. Hard to say exactly how, but I doubt it was a careless cigarette.
