What oil brand and weight to use on 2k_s430 w/97k?
I just bought a 2000 s430 with 97k...want to change the oil and don't know what brand and weight to use. I have heard many different answers from mechanics and service advisors at the dealership...i thought it was 5w30 but am told to use 15w40?

It used to be Mobil1 0W-40 that the dealers often used and recommended, but now I heard they've switched to either 5W-something. Not sure.
However you can still use 0W-40 with no problems.

Do I use 0W-40 year round or just during the winter since it's a very thin weight? And during summer go to 5W or 10w-40?
Does it have to be Mobil 1?
I paid $23K, came with 20s.

This is a big topic on ferrarichat.
From what I've read and understand, unless you are tracking your car and running over 8000 rpms , I'd stay away from 15-40w.
The real info shows 0 weight oil to be best at startup. Not what it needs to be to lubricate but much closer then 10 or 15w. As I'm sure you know the startup is a hash time for engines.
I suggest trying 0-20w or 0-30w and see how that does.
Of course I'm talking about synthetic oil... I use Mobil 1

It doesn't have to be Mobil1 or 0W-40, but MB recommends and uses it for a reason. If your car came with a manual and service type booklet, there should be a list of other acceptable oils listed in there.

That's not on the approved oils list. Here's a list of the approved motor oils if you want to use something other than Mobil 1 0W-40. Any oil that has the 229.3, 229.5, or 229.51 approval is fine to use in your 2000 S430.

Best to let your engine warm up before running up the RPMs
Oh, and it doesn't have to be Mobil 1, but why not? I would def. use as full a synthetic as poss.

Found this piece of reading on www.carbible.com/viscosity:
So 0W oils don't flow through a viscometer in zero seconds - they rate at 5 seconds like a 5W oil, but they will be pourable at a much lower temperature. The bottom line then is that if you think your car is ever likely to see a cold morning in the -45°F (-43°C) range, you should be considering 0W40 oil. If not, 5W40 will do. Note that at -45°F, you'll probably have more to worry about than your engine oil - like your radiator fluid, brittle tyres, frozen locks, permafrost on the windscreen etc.etc.etc.......
So seems I should be okay with 0W-40 or 5W-40.

my indy put in Lubro Moly voll-synthese on the last change. Works fine. This time I'm doing a change myself and I will be using Royal Purple 5w-30.
These brand are know to be much better than mobil 1 BTW.
