My stock ECU '03 S600 ran 11.97@114.70!!

Our group had a track rental at MIR on March 1 and I had the opportunity to run 10 times with various launch techniques with my car. Here is the best run:

60'-1.755
330'-5.002
1/8-7.709@91.08
1000'-10.027
1/4-11.972@114.70

Overall this really impressed me as I did not expect the car to run any faster than 12.3@114 or so. The only mods were drag radials and the Eisenmann rear mufflers. Amazingly the stock mufflers are straight through as well so I have no idea how much these new units actually helped. My car has 46K miles on it too so this will validate that even a middle mileage S600 has the potential to run well. I will get the Renntech ECU/TCU upgrade soon....who knows what it will run then?

Yeah, I did add a squirt of 100 octane to make sure there was absolutely no knock or loss of performance due to poor quality 93 octane.

One thing of note, while I have not run my car on a strip, I did swap over to Bridgestone Potentza RE-01R tires pretty quickly. The improved traction lets the car launch unbelievably hard with the traction control off, very little tire spin. I would not doubt one bit if my car turned high 11s as well.

These things are stupid fast in the straight line.

John,

Grip is just one issue with tires. I've had tires blow apart and to me that's more important. I'm just a Michelin guy because they build a dependable tire that also has excellent specs. The re01r might provide better grip but I shy away from Goodyear, Firestone, and to some degree Bridgestone. Though the Ferrari spec tire was an S01 Bridgestone.

Congrats and good to know... go eat some new M5's :)

Best 1/4 time I've seen for a basically stock '03-06 S600.

You should post your racing slip on www.dragtimes.com

The RENNTech upgrade will knock about 4/10 sec off your 1/4.

That seems to be the problem. Its damn fast, but doesn't go very far at around 13mpg. I can pass it right and left, in my diesel, because I don't have to stop at the gas station hardly at all

It is really cool to pin your head back at WOT in this thing though !

I was there as well and everyone there was pulling for the car to break 12's. After adjusting the weight of the car it happened. To see a car that big run was a lil Awsome event. Awsome run.

Educate me.........

When you do a run, is reaction time a factor or does the clock start after you cross a "trigger"?

It depends on the type of race. When 'we' (average Joes) go to the track for Test N Tune trials (or whatever they call it), then the clock doesn't start ticking until you've crossed the line (yes you can sit there for a few seconds perfecting your launch).

Professional NHRA racing is different.

The car isn't that hard to launch once the tires are nice and sticky. You brake torque about 1/4 throttle then floor it to launch..its that easy. If MIR had been prepared a little better then I could have done better than 1.755 for the 60'. Some other S600's have been in the low 1.6's with better track prep. We were running pre-season and the track was very "green". Oh, and no matter what type of racing (NHRA, IHRA, etc.) the clocks don't start until the car moves and breaks the beam. That is how a car with a worse e.t. can actually win a close drag race when their reaction is better than the opponent. It happens in pro stock, top fuel and funny car racing all the time because the competition is so tight.

I will be getting the Renntech ECU/TCU soon. Maybe you can bring the CL600 to MIR on April 12? What was the issue you were having with the stumbling/rough running? What parts were replaced/repaired?

To my understanding, professional racing uses a different system. The ambers on the tree light up simultaneously with the reaction timer kicking off on the last amber light. I forgot, but a .4 or a .5 second reaction time is perfect as that is the time elapsed between the last amber and the green light.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

You are right...this is referred to as running a "Pro Light" You set this up by tripping the second beam at the start line.
