03 S600, K&N's, other simple mods?

I don't see that my year model S600 has a nice flowing air element available, such as a K&N. I see the 02 non-turbo car does, and the 05-06 S600. What is the difference in filter housings that would prevent me from using a set of either of the above ?

Is there an alternative?

Because the car is already ridiculously fast, I am starting with the small inexpensive stuff first- plus, a set of K&Ns would allow me to hear the turbos a little better .

the info you see on K&N's website is incorrect, as of right now there is no aftermarket airfilter for a bi-turbo Mercedes motor. The 02 airfilter will not fit in the 03+ intake, yes it has been attempted.

Aside from the oiling debacle, I hear K&Ns don't gain anything on MBs anyways.

any airfilter that flows more than stock will make HP on a bi-turbo mercedes, the intake is a huge restriction

Are there any options other than the Renntech airbox? Several thousand dollars for an airbox is pretty crazy.

I'd go for Renntech, call what they have and choose what you are looking for , for you vehicle but very expensive.

The thing is, how do you know how restrictive the stock air filters are, compared to K&Ns?

The design of the intake and airbox is much more important in terms of harnessing cold air to make power. Not bashing K&N, just my 0.02

Can you actually feel a difference in the S? I've debating whether to throw a set of K&Ns in there or just go stock. A lot of people have been telling me K&Ns can rob power in a Benz.

ive had good luck with them on my w210 e55 and on numerous other performance vehicles, since the application at hand is a bi-turbo 600 i bet the gains would be more substantial then on NA benzes, again all a moot point as there is not an application for this motor, yet.

You will notice a difference. Best of Luck

I know the above is an old post, but does anybody make a high flow filter for the 03 S600 bi-turbo?

Boosted cars always respond to K&N's better than N/A. Maybe on a Ford/Chevy/Honda, etc. a K&N on an N/A car could give like maybe 1 HP and a nicer sound, but from what I've gathered, it seems K&N's are in debate for Benzes in general, so especially with an N/A car I'd stay away from them, at least it's what I'm doing.

The air boxes themself are the restriction on V12TT.

I am starting development program for 600/65s and will post the results.

Get the K & N's I've run them for years and you can always tell a differance vs. stock. They are much cheaper than replacing stock filters.

I haven't been able to find K&N's for the 03 S600 bi-turbo. Do you know where I can get them?

they are supposedly in development, right now you can get filters from BMC, as far as I know they are the only commercially available filter for the V12TT platform. you can get them here :

the airboxes on a (s)600 are a JOKE!!

Jayson...have you tried to dyno or run the car the track without the filters? i'd be curious to see what an impact the airbox/filter has??

thanks,
john

John,

I have not, our airboxes are identical to those that come in the 65's I have dynoed before and after with my airfiltes and gained 10rwhp. I am currently looking into redesigning the airbox/air intake setup.

may sound stupid???...what if we ran the snorkel tubes on both side up to the front and used two (one for each side) k&n cone filters placed in front of the radiator...just behind the grill??

you're the boss...and know best...do you know anything about the kleeman 600 upgrade...talked to byron (think that was his name) and he seemed to be a wealth of information about the tt600's...however i haven't seen anybody on these boards using their software...i was looking to explore the idea of using someone other than renntech??

thanks for you input!

john

John,
You are thinking along the correct path, but to get the amount of air that we need theres not enough room to fit a large enough filter. I have explore that style of design but in my opnion it just wont work to get the volume of air we need.

John,
I appreciate the kind words. I am no boss, Im just highly enthusiastic about getting the most out of my car when we are extremely limited with both parts and information on our 600 platform. If you spoke to Kleemann, I think you are referring to Cory or Brandon. I know of one person using their software on a SL65 with good results. If my car was stock they would be one of the first tuners I would turn to for tuning. Hope this helps man!!

Jason
