The W220 Mini-Bar Mod (rear seat armrest)
seperate page in html

First I would like to preface this with the fact that I am AGAINST drinking and driving. I intended this for looks, to see if I could build something like this. I also know that once any of these bottles are opened it would be considered an "open container" something breaking the law in probably every state of the US. I am strongly against the idea of enabling someone to access booze during driving. That being said... here is my project.

My wife and I were escorting an insanely-hot 6ft russian blond to a crazy expensive dinner. While in the backseat of our 2002 W220 she said something along the lines of "Wow... knowing you Greg... I'm amazed you don't have a bar back here." This got the wheels in my mind turning... For those that don't know... here is a picture of my bar in my house.
(Click thumbnails to enlarge)

So... I went to the local liquour store and bought some mini's... wen't online and ordered some special foam. Bought some wood-carving knives (which were worthless on the foam.) And an exacto knife (worked great!) And an old bread knife (that worked awesome!) and started measuring the internal area of the armrest.

Tools in hand I started toying with a section I cut from the master sheet. I also bought some mini glasses at a crafts store... I wanted them to hold about 3-4oz of liquid so the mini-bottle would not make the glass too full. Here is a pic of my first attempt and lining some bottles up for cutting.

Here is my first (but not last) cut insert for the back. I wanted it to hold the glasses, two cognac bottles, and two scotch bottles.

And the back of the insert:

Here is my backseat... nothing changed here... bone-stock:

Finished product in place:

Again I would like to note that I do not condone drinking and driving. Believe it or not... I VERY RARELY drink... I just always wanted to be a bartender (then I found out how much it pays), I love making drinks for others and creating new recipes... it is my way of cooking I guess.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Whoa, superb! That compartment was always useless to me, now I can put it to good use.

Except, instead of carving shapes for alcoholic products, I may carve one for a handgun.

Nicely done sir.

Now we are talking.

gtig - dont you think you need to curve that foam facing foward? With armrest up the bottle head is facing down and when drunk you'll probably not secure the top right? Nothing like the smell of alcohol in an S. Nice

Why am I not surprised that you would know that Sunman, you've gotta add that on.

BTW...did you happen to see that Carlos replaced the inside liner of the trunk to a 2005 version? The difference is it has 2 pull handles as supposed to the 2001-2004.5 that doesn't have the pull down handles.

Take a look at it when you get a chance.

How to buy the parts.
Thanks for the comments guys. Here is where to get the foam.

With shipping it was $47.99
site: www.foambymail.com
item: 2" Polyethylene Foam
Pecolor: Charcoal

On my next ones... I am going to try using a dremel bit. It may be more messy... but I think it will yeild better results than hacking away with an X-acto knife.

I never charge for drinks. Most my friends feel guilty and buy me something I don't have on the bar tho... so it ends up working out. lol

sweet, just cut the holes slightly oversize then take the foam to a coachworks place to have the foam trimmed in matching leather to the car for the oem look =)

"escorting an insanely-hot 6ft russian blond "

I see a lot of great pictures of you carving up the arm rest, and little bottles, but I see not 1 picture of the said insanely-hot 6ft russian blond. Which leads me to believe that either a) it was actually just your friend that said this, and there was no blond, or b) you were too drunk already to bother with a picture, or c) your wife was an impediment to any sort of snapshot of this creature so you are left with a memory emblazoned permanently on your mind, waiting for the moment you run across this woman a second time - now with the oh so Bond-like answer, "why, certainly. In fact, I had one installed in the W220 just for an occasion like this. Let me slide in beside you there just a moment, my dear...while I fix you a nice scotch..."
