What do you think is realistic to sell this car for?

My sister thinks it's time to get rid of her 2001 S600. It's black on oyster. It has 25,000 miles. She added the AMG sport package as well as upgrading to 19" chrome AMG monoblock wheels. It pretty much as every option except for Distronic. Any ballpark figures? I'm thinking she can get somewhere in the mid 70s.

KBB.com says anywhere from about 76K to 88K, wholesale and private party.

I would say, if she can find a buyer, somewhere around the low 80s would be good.

The problem is that there aren't too many S600 buyers...

I know... it's fairly difficult to find buyers for expensive used cars.

If she is getting a new car, the easiest thing to do would be to trade it in, but obvisouly you wouldn't get as much.

When we were selling a 97 S500, we couldn't find a buyer. We ended up keeping it for a while and selling it pretty cheap. We would've been better off just trading it in in the first place.

Either way... good luck with it. =)

Yeah, I was just saying that it's fairly difficult to find buyers for expensive cars like the 600.

If you can work a good deal on trading it in, I think that would be the easiest thing to do.

Very unlikely for you to get the KBB book values, regardless of trade-in/retail. You need to find the actual wholesale market and what value they are moving between dealers. That is what they use for actual values (for trade in) and not the Edmunds, KBB, or Nada. I traded my SL600 in and got significantly less than what the blue book value was - but I knew that going in. You'll be lucky to get 60K from the dealer I imagine based on where the market is right now.

60K? That low?

That's about 50% depreciation in less than 2 years.

I must say that KBB is a pretty accurate indicator in most cases, when used properly. The person must understand that when you in put the info. on the car & are asked to choose the condition of the car, you must choose either fair or good. This will give you a better indication of what the car will bring on trade. The mistake most people make is clicking EXCELLENT when the car is not in that shape. Now, there are exception to every rule & the V12 market is one that is the exception, along with SL500 (R129). These cars became so soft that some dealers were hitting cars $12 to $14k back of wholesale book. The moral of my story is that KBB is a good tool, but you must remember that they don't buy cars!!!!!

So, if you take KBB wholesale for a 2001 S600, I think it's around 76K. Then subtract the fact that it's a V12... you get around the low to mid 60K.
So a less than 2 year old 130K car drops in value that much?

That really sucks.

That is the whole foundation of my statement about choosing the 55 version over the V12. The market would dictate my decision to go with the AMG any day of the week.

three months ago I would have gladly taken that S600 off your hands (as you describe it) at higher 70s/lower 80s. The problem is that the 2003 model coming out has significantly more of everything, including looks, while in 2001 the S600 was only slightly more powerful than the S500. I am currently looking at a 2004 S600.

I knew they should've sold it a month ago. My brother in law just doesn't like the fact that he's taken such a huge hit on the car and he hates to lose money. Live and learn...

Don't know what MB USA was thinking. New S55 and S600 going to absolutely KILL resale value of the MY 2001-2002 S55 and S600.

MB is thinking that they will blow the doors off of everyone with a 500hp engine. I do not think that they care about the resale value of their older cars . With the one the dealers still have in inventory they are giving huge rebates to the dealers to pass on to the customer to buy these cars.

same happened with my brother in law and his cl500. it was a 2000 model and blue book was around 65k (38k miles). he ended up giving it in to the dealer for 52k because he couldn't find anyone willing to give more than 55k for it and the 3k wasn't that big of a difference. so as a result he decided to get it to the dealer as fast as possible before november hits ()since he's expecting a cl55) and prices drop even more.

Extremely high value cars will lose value quite quickly in the first few years of their use. The thing is, if you continue to drive it for another 2-3 years, the value of the car will only move from 60K-ish to probably low to mid 40's. So its not going to move very fast coming down from where it is now. You just have to realize that its going to depreciate most in the first two years, and with demand as soft as it is (new models, slow economy) - you just don't have many buyers.
