Is the price worth it?

I have come across a 2002 S600 (W220) for $28k. It has 81k miles and looks very well kept, and has a clean carfax report. The motor sounded good and every part (visible) was clean. The only problem is that i noticed an odor when i sat in the car and when i turned it on the AC blasted in my face and the odor was so strong that i could barely breath! I have never owned a MB so i have no idea what to look for. Could this be becauase its been flooded before or becuase the air filters are extremly dirty? What do I look for? and if it is a simple problem, is the price worth it?

No one cn say for sure what the odor is.. MAybe the cabin filters have never been changed?? hard to say.

Either way, If I were to advise you on your first Mercedes, unless you know how to handle a wrench and have a lot of money to spend I would not try to persuade you to to purchase a 2002 S anything. Especially a 600 because they are a bear to work on, and very expensive. So those are just not great cars to have today maintenance wise. But again, if I was in love with it, and the price was right, I more than likely would but that's just me. I know how to work on things if I need to.

If you are willing to spend 28 to 30k you can find a nice 2003 or 2004 S 430 or 500 and you will be pleased in the long run. Many changes happened to those cars after 2003 and the prices right now are great so I would take advantage of a newer version of the S class.

SAVE you money and get a 03 + S600, theres really no point of getting a 02 S600 over a 02 S500, the 600 has only like what 60more hp? get the 03 and it will have 191 more hp

'04 S600
Jae145:
While I'm new to MB, I spent a LOT of time researching the S55 and S600. Ended up JUST buying a '04 S600 (today, see my post) w/ 28,000 miles.

I would highly recommend:
1. Get the '03 or newer. More ponies, better quality, more features
2. GET a Certified Pre-Owned car that you can extend the warranty as far as possible (as far as they will let you extend it or as much as you can afford)

While this is a beautiful and awesome automobile, it will cost you a FORTUNE to keep the gremlins at bay, unless it's under warranty!

With regards to the S600, '03 - '05, expect to pay anywhere from $35k - $70k, depending on condition, year, miles, equipment, etc.

Good luck in your search. It took me a while, but I'm obviously giddy with excitement about picking mine up tomorrow morning, feel it was well worth the time spent looking carefully!

Definately get an 03+

Less problems than the 00-02 models and in the 03+ models, some things have been upgraded. In the 03+ you'll have a wide screen nav, bi-xenon headlights, 03+ style tailights, etc...

I don't think you should get a high mileaged S, perhaps make it 60-65k miles at the max. I'm sure you can find a nice 03 S500 for about $30k (more or less).

If you can, '04 is better than '03. The '04-'06 models are essentially the same. 2004 saw a vastly improved COMAND. Yes, the 2003 COMAND is widescreen but it's still CD based. The '04 DVD COMAND has more features, computes routes faster and supports a more advanced voice recognition system. On a road trip, it's very nice to not have to change CDs. It's also cool to have it compute a route from CA to NY. The MOST fiber ring that replaced the D2B fiber bus in the 2000-2003 allows for better integration between all the audio components.

Thanks for the heads up, did not know that about the command system.

I have an 03 S and the nav constantly looses signal and I always have to reset everything, which gets annoying. This happens about once a month. Luckily, I don't really use the nav and as far as road trips, I never take my cars out of state. So I don't really mind the cd command system.

Yeah, there's A LOT of Russians in NY, Brooklyn esp. Sometimes when I watch Russian t.v., the commercials they show are mainly based from Russians of NY.

NY is like little Russia.

Bought one already, resold made a small profit.

Yeah that is something that ca be said about these cars that cannot be said about a lot of brands.. They have the same name but they all seem to have a certain character of their own..
I guess I was at the right place at the right time last year when I was driving down the street and our eyes met.. One look and I know that this was the car for me!!
I've had her 1 year now and all of my maintenance funds have went directly into MODS...Ive only had a few trips to the dealer to take care of small warranty items.. otherwise I thin I pretty much have that "right" one.
