Is the price worth it?
Either way, If I were to advise you on your first Mercedes, unless you know how to handle a wrench and have a lot of money to spend I would not try to persuade you to to purchase a 2002 S anything. Especially a 600 because they are a bear to work on, and very expensive. So those are just not great cars to have today maintenance wise. But again, if I was in love with it, and the price was right, I more than likely would but that's just me. I know how to work on things if I need to.
If you are willing to spend 28 to 30k you can find a nice 2003 or 2004 S 430 or 500 and you will be pleased in the long run. Many changes happened to those cars after 2003 and the prices right now are great so I would take advantage of a newer version of the S class.

While I'm new to MB, I spent a LOT of time researching the S55 and S600. Ended up JUST buying a '04 S600 (today, see my post) w/ 28,000 miles.
I would highly recommend:
1. Get the '03 or newer. More ponies, better quality, more features
2. GET a Certified Pre-Owned car that you can extend the warranty as far as possible (as far as they will let you extend it or as much as you can afford)
While this is a beautiful and awesome automobile, it will cost you a FORTUNE to keep the gremlins at bay, unless it's under warranty!
With regards to the S600, '03 - '05, expect to pay anywhere from $35k - $70k, depending on condition, year, miles, equipment, etc.
Good luck in your search. It took me a while, but I'm obviously giddy with excitement about picking mine up tomorrow morning, feel it was well worth the time spent looking carefully!
Less problems than the 00-02 models and in the 03+ models, some things have been upgraded. In the 03+ you'll have a wide screen nav, bi-xenon headlights, 03+ style tailights, etc...
I don't think you should get a high mileaged S, perhaps make it 60-65k miles at the max. I'm sure you can find a nice 03 S500 for about $30k (more or less).

I have an 03 S and the nav constantly looses signal and I always have to reset everything, which gets annoying. This happens about once a month. Luckily, I don't really use the nav and as far as road trips, I never take my cars out of state. So I don't really mind the cd command system.

Do you actually own an S class or are you still looking?
I guess I was at the right place at the right time last year when I was driving down the street and our eyes met.. One look and I know that this was the car for me!!
I've had her 1 year now and all of my maintenance funds have went directly into MODS...Ive only had a few trips to the dealer to take care of small warranty items.. otherwise I thin I pretty much have that "right" one.
