Will not go into gear, please help

I just got home about 20 mins ago from work. I tried to put it in P position but it gets stuck between P(park) and R(reverse). I cant get my key out. can anyone identify the problem?

this happened back in july. but the total opposite. My car was in "P" and i wasnt able to get it into gear. this is frustrating. discourages me to keep my car.

Your shift control unit box is toasted (stuck), probably a plastic piece broke and jam somewhere. Quick (temp) fix is to remove the shift knob (twist the chrome ring at the bottom then pull it out), then use the hammer and slightly tap on top of the shift control and push it at the same time ... , search around.

Once removed, the shift control unit is pretty easy to fix. Most dealer and shop would simply replace it for another one (quite expensive in part)

Here's more info on how to fix it

I looked, but no plastic piece.

I took this car in back in july. i bought a new module, thinking they would replace it. but i think they just removed the plastic clip, took my new module and my $1300 labor.

$1300 LABOR ? The shop I know charge 300, and I already think it's a lot, knowing how much work involved (not that much). Even dealer book call for only 3-4 hours for this job ($400-500 labor). Which shop did you have fixing your car ? Seem like they do quite a crappy job. Is it a Mercedes specialty shop ? Look like they screw up your shifter and center console pretty bad (I remmember you have problem w/ the center console back when you have the shift replaced). If you search, you'll see quite a few people have this shift stuck problem, and even dealer charge in neighbor of $1000 (part + labor).

I have the WIS (Workshop Instruction Software), same proprietary software as authorized Mercedes dealer use for all repair/analysis/service. I can print out and give you detail instruction for the job. I can't help w/ labor though, due to liability and I'm pretty tight on time ....

If you have the shifter out, I might be able to quickly exam and tell you whether it's repairable or not

There's a shop in Monterey Park, MBTech, highly recommended by lot of people. Bunch of mechanic left Keyes Mercedes and start the shop. Very honest and reasonable in price. (626) 288 3429, might want to give them a call for consultation.

It was one of my cousin's friend's shop. they're MB specialists. Somewhere in the bay area. I would take it back but I no longer live in the area. I asked a lot of questions on the forums before taking it in to the stealership or a repair shop. I wanted to know what I was getting myself into. But I did searches everyday. So a month went by, I needed my car running. So his friend took it in. I spent almost 600 on towing. It was getting towed back and forth. I will give that number a call tomorrow. hopefully they can fix it at an affordable price. how far is monterey park from anaheim by the way? this sucks, i was going to trade it in this weekend for a C350 too.

thanks zam for the reference. i got my car back and i am fully satisfied. i took it there and they finished everything in two days. couldve been one but i told them to do my brakes, service B at the last minute. got a new module, he also fixed my comand. not totally. missing a limited switch that is a hard piece to find eventually. but other than that, theyre just like you said. friendly and fair. monterey park is a pretty far commute, but worth the money.

Sell the car if you want, but there has been detailed posts about this issue on the forums.. You Must do research before getting upset when you get stuck!!
The problem is a little plastic lever that is located inside your shift module.
Yours has broken as they all do in time..

The fix is..

a: get the dealer to order a new shifter for you .they run about 400 bucks if I remember correctly, or

b: remove the shifter module, take it apart and remove the clip. This is what I did about six months ago... The only issue with this is that you will be able to take your car out of park without pressing the brake pedal.. YEah!!!!!...

I have posted pics of the module taken apart on here somewhere just search "stuck in park" and you will find all you need to know.

BTW. You should put they year and model of your car, and your location in your title so we know what we are referring too...

my shifter is working fine, for the most part. 1 out of 10 times, it will offer resistance when moving out of PARK. it's not a problem at this point, but is cause for concern in the back of my mind.

i'm thinking about going in and just removing the plastic piece before i am stuck somewhere without a hammer. is this a good idea, bearing in mind my shifter is essentially working well? any drawbacks, other than being able to move into gear without the brake?

i'm not sure if i am interpreting the info on this thread right, but if the plastic piece fails while in the shifter, then you need a new shifter?
