Talking Trade my 2001 S-500 for a CLK Cabrio

I love my S-500! However, because the gas prices here in Calif (SF Bay) are outta control ($4.00+ per gallon) and won't be coming down, I want to trade it. As nice as it is, quite frankly-Its a gas hog. I took it to a Honda dealer and almost traded it for an Acord or something. I got in the Accord, and just couldn't do it. I on'y drive this 500 on weekends-its not an everyday car.

So, now I'm thinking, maybe I can trade it for a CLK (320-6Cylinder)Convertible or something--that might be just a little less expensive on gas. I know my fellow forum members here will call me crazy-but what do you think? I am interested in doing some sort of EVEN trade. I give them my 500, they give me a convertible CLK...No money involved....Thoughts?

I don't see the point.. YOU are not going to get much better gas mileage.. 23 or 24 tops.. but you sacrifice sooo much space inside.. forget about the trunk. it's basically non existent.. the absolute worse of all is that what;s left of your back seat is sitting right on top of your rear tires...

Trust a guy who had an 06 clk 350 ( hence the screen name ) for all of 6 months.. and could not stand it anymore...

Don't get me wrong they are fun as hell to drive.. and a great car if you have something else to drive .. otherwise there isn't much use for them compared to the many many justifications for owning a big S class...

IF you are doing just for the gas you are wasting your time my friend...

Get a W203 or a new W204 if you want to save gas at least you have some basic room and have some use for the car other than driving around with the top down like bringing home groceries for example.....

i've owned two CLK's and I just went to a S500 4MATIC. the only difference yo will see is filling up the tank. since the S has a larger tank. MPG is around the same. Stick with the S.

Thanks for your reply...My 500 is not my main car at all. Not an everyday car. I drive a C230 for my everyday car, or my Chevy Tahoe. The CLK would be a weekender...only.

FRom a fundamental and technical prespective, gas prices will drop 20-30%, you can bank on that.

Little gas..

Spending over $100 to fill up my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 every week or $400. to fill up my boat every other week and then spending $60 filling up with high octane for my 2000 s500 is a relief! If you really want to save money on gas, you should consider getting yourself a volkswagon -----> buggy? IMO

there is no such thing as straight across

not in terms of a dealer anyway, our 2003 E320 got 27mpg and better on the highway.personally i think you should stick with the S class and laugh at fuel prices,"F" them, just fill it with premium and take heart in knowing it is all a scam.your S will not trade very well anyway, the only reason fuel is at the current price is because thats what america can afford to pay."WE HAVE BITTEN THE HAND THAT FEEDS US".

Since your S500 is not your DD, then gas prices should not be a big factor in whether to trade it or not. Besides, the CLK MPG is not that much better.

As for even trade, that exists in name only. THe dealer will always accept a higher value car to give you a lower one. The difference in value is how they stay in business.
