Tire Pressure System hiccup
The other night I was driving along minding my business when the message board in my W220 lit up like Times Square telling me the RL (rear left?) tire had failed! I pulled into a station and looked first them took out my tire gauge and tested all four tires. They were all fine. I reset the monitor and nothing else untoward since. I have had ongoing issues with the dealer about the sensors reading incorrectly (different side-to-side when a gauge says they are the same). Anybody had this experience? More to the point, what's wrong and what's the fix?

It's most likely the sensor, but they should all replaced because the batteries die about the same time. They're supposed to last 7 years but some don't seem to. It could possibly be the central receiver but most people would advise replacing the sensors first. They're about $80 apiece at Tire Rack, I think, plus tire dismount, remount and install.
The good news is that they're working on TPMS sensors that generate their own power from wheel rotation. That will improve system reliability greatly because the sensor batteries are such a weak link.

Before you buy new ones be sure you're getting sensors that match the system in your car - this might be helpful: https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...highlight=tpms.
It will also help you to be sure the system is reset after the installation.

I have to agree that the problem is probably one or more of the sensors. I had a similar issue with my SL55, and that is what it came down to.
I believe that each unit has their own self contained battery and they will eventually die as they are not being recharged. At least, that is what happened to me. The units should be purchased through Merc as they have to be programmed to the car, so generic sensors just won't work.

Actually, as Skylaw points out, so long as you get the type for your model and year you'll be fine. Tirerack is very precise. To order only TPMS sensors (which they don't list separately), order a tire/wheel combo for your car, add the sensors to your cart and then delete the tire/wheel combos. It works like a champ and they've never been wrong as far as I know. (There are only three or four different sensor versions.)
Only early systems needed to be reset by a dealer. I'm fairly certain that the 2004 S-class system will need at most a user reset from the instrument cluster followed by 10 minutes of driving. The procedure is outlined in the manual. It's best to set the tires, cold, with an accurate gauge before performing the reset, as per the manual.
