IPOD connection DIY - Anyone???
https://mbworld.org/forums/audio-electronics/194660-gateway-500-most-o-good-unit-poor-documentation.html deals with the MOST bus version of the Gateway 500; you will need the D2B version, so be sure to read for the differences. The Gateway 500 is, in my view, the class act of the iPod installations.
You lack an AUX input to COMAND in your car, so you cannot use the Apple/Mercedes kit.
Search for MoBridge and DICE for alternatives to the Gateway 500.
Search for Harman-Kardon Drive+Play for an FM direct antenna lead connection with a display.
FM over the air solutions are cheap and awful; worse sound quality than you probably got from your tape.
NOW- I was woundering using the cassette -
remove the wire from the cassette
open radio on top
splice wire on to sensor/contact area of tape deck
final connection to that contact, run wire down center and install done.
looking at that cassette for ipod, theres nothing to it except that center contact piece which touches the tapedeck contact - gives sound
What do you think? i really dont care about loosing the CD changer if anyone has ideas...
2000 S430
everyone talks about this gateway500 - doesnt that cost almost 500 dollars?? for an ipod - Fck that, i rather try the wire idea. if possible

Even a quick look at the extremely low-end cassette adapters would reveal the circuitry necessary so that the iPod output is converted to the proper input for the tape head. Even those don't just "connect the wires" directly to the tape head.
Try, and fry away!
