2003 Tailigh5ts on 2001 S500

Here's some pics of 2003 tailights on my car. Still waiting for the relay to be completed for the 2003 headlights. Don't even know if it will work for sure. But anyways, 2003 tailights look tight and much better than the 'old' tailights IMHO.

Ansonn,

Did you just go to the dealer and buy them?

How much?

Is it a direct replacement?

Looks like more LED's than the old one or is it just more reflective?

Thanks.

Ansonnn,

I have the same questions as MBfiend. I have a Blk 2001 S500. Lease come up in 2004 would like to change the head light and tailight.

I did not think the Headlight change will be easy...pretty sure they would have changed the hood/fender shape/slope some.

Are the rear lights fully functional? Please keep us posted.

I like the look of those, at first I wasnt sure... but its a cleaner design IMO. They look great.

Wow, you got some nice cars there. How 'bout a pic of all of them? Glad to see another 850 owner on the board.

Just got back from Vacation. I am going to reply to each post. Let me know if I've left out any.

VRAA,

are ur lights on or is that a reflection of the flash?

THE LIGHTS ARE A REFLECTION OF MY FLASH.

MBFIEND.

Did you just go to the dealer and buy them?

I BOUGHT THEM FROM THE DEALER

How much?

$120.00 PER SIDE

Is it a direct replacement?

THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT ON THE NEW LIGHTS, THERE IS ONE EXTRA PLASTIC PEG AND ONE EXTRA BOLT (I DON'T KNOW WHY MB DID THIS). THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO GET AROUND THIS AND THAT IS EITHER TO REMOVE THE PEG (BY SNIPPING IT WITH SOME SHARP PLIERS) AND THE BOLT OR DRILL TWO EXTRA HOLES INTO THE MOUNTING LOCATION. I CHOSE TO DRILL THE EXTRA HOLES TO KEEP THE WATERTIGHT CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NEW LIGHTS. YOU CAN USE THE RUBBER SEALS INCLUDED TO MARK THE HOLES. TOOK ABOUT AN HOUR TO REMOVE THE OLD AND INSTALL THE NEW TAIL LIGHTS ON. FORTUNATELY, THE CONNECTOR IS THE SAME. OH AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOME TOUCH UP PAINT TO COAT THE HOLES AFTER DRILLING TO PREVENT RUST (YOU'RE DRILLING INTO METAL).

Looks like more LED's than the old one or is it just more reflective?

ACTUALLY, SAME AMOUNT OF LEDS BUT WITH THE PLASTIC BEING MORE REFLECTIVE AND MORE CRYSTALLINE IN APPEARANCE. BASICALLY THE RED PLASTIC IS MUCH MUCH CLEARER.

Thanks.

NICK

I have the same questions as MBfiend. I have a Blk 2001 S500. Lease come up in 2004 would like to change the head light and tailight.

TAILIGHT IS 90% PLUG AND PLAY. HEADLIGHTS ARE UNFORTUNATELY NOT. I AM WATING FOR A RELAY TO BE MADE FOR THE 03 HEADLIGHT TO THE 00-02 HEADLIGHT. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE 03 HEADLIGHT HAS AN EXTRA PIN THAT CONTROLS THE SHUTTER FOR THE HIGH BEAM XENONS AND THE 00-02 HEADLIGHT DOES NOT. THIS COULD CAUSE SOME MAJOR ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS IF IT IS IGNORED OR DONE THE WRONG WAY. I WILL CERTAINLY KEEP EVERYONE UPDATED.

I did not think the Headlight change will be easy...pretty sure they would have changed the hood/fender shape/slope some.

AS FAR AS I KNOW, THE DIMENSIONS OF THE 03 HEADLIGHTS ARE THE SAME. I KNOW THE SLOPE AND ANGLE ON THE S600 HOOD IS DIFFERENT TO ACCOMODATE THE TWIN TURBO ENGINE BUT I AM NOT SURE IF IT APPLIES TO 'LOWER' S-CLASSES. THE 03 S600 HOOD IS ABOUT 1/2 INCH (MORE OR LESS DON'T REMEMBER THE EXACT NUMBERS) HIGHER.

Are the rear lights fully functional? Please keep us posted.

ABSOLUTELY. THAT WAS ONE THING I WAS AFRAID OF GIVEN THE SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WITH THE HEADLIGHTS. FORTUNATELY, THE CONNECTORS ARE THE SAME. OF COURSE EVERYTHING HAD TO BE TESTED BEFORE INSTALLATION. LOOKS A LOT NICER IN PERSON AND MORE MODERN IN MY OPINION. NOT AN EXPENSIVE UPGRADE EITHER. I THINK MOST PEOPLE WILL LIKE THE NEW LOOK.

I WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED ON THE HEADLIGHTS. PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO ASK ME ANY QUESTIONS YOU HAVE.

REGINE LIFE, MBGUY 850,

I like the look of those, at first I wasnt sure... but its a cleaner design IMO. They look great.

I AGREE. I WASN'T SO SURE OF THE NEW LOOK AT FIRST BUT ONCE I GOT THEM ON, I REALLY LOVE THEM. YOU'RE RIGHT, IT IS A MUCH CLEANER AND BRIGHTER LOOK. THE RED PLASTIC IS A LOT CLEARER AND CRYSTALLINE IN APPEARANCE.

Wow, you got some nice cars there. How 'bout a pic of all of them? Glad to see another 850 owner on the board.

I WILL POST PICS TOMORROW. JUST GOT BACK FROM VACATION AND IT IS SUNNY SO I WILL PULL THE CARS OUT OF THE GARAGE FOR SOME PICS. LOVE THE 850 R. VERY FIRST CAR AND A BARGARIN FOR THE PRICE/PERFORMANCE.

Tail light prices

$120 per side is cheap! Can anyone get that price or is that wholesale. Looks great. I may give it a try. Thanks

That is so tight, I am going to get a pair for myself then. Thank you for your pictures. nice X5 you got it down there. Which one is faster, your X5, S500, or 850R. I heard that 850 R is also fast.

No prob

I'll post some more pics tomorrow. Just let me know if you have any other questions. Would like to see pics of your Carlsson S500 sometimes.

Suprisingly, the X5 4.6is is the fastest car in both numbers and visceral feel. This is consistent being the X5 has the most hp and torque

X5 4.6is 0-60 6.1 sec

340 HP
350 lb-ft

S500 0-60 6.2 sec

302 HP
340 HP w/ Lorinser cat back and RENNTech Airfilter
339 lb-ft

Volvo 850 R 0-60 6.5 sec

240 HP
221 lb-ft

Your car looks really nice especially with those Monoblock VI. Why did you take them off??? Looks like you lowered the car. Nicely done.

Yeah, I purchased the monoblock VI first, as I could not find anymore carlsson 2/5 in the market. I love the monoblock too, being one piece and light. And then I found a set of new Carlsson 2/5 with a great price in Ebay. At least now, I can change the wheel to brabus or carlsson if I want to. The car lowered by using RBtech lowering kit. The rear part of W220 is already adjustable from the manufacturer. SO you can adjust the rear suspension without installing any new suspension parts, but you need to raise your car and you need to go under the car.
