Im considering upgrading my command unit, either with the factory unit or an aftermarket one. If you have upgraded, some pictures would be great

What year is your car, 2003 or earlier with D2B or 2004 with MOST? There are some folks in the W211 forum that have upgraded their COMAND with the newer 2009 COMAND with Ipod support, MP3 folder etc. The only problem was they couldn't get the button to work to access the CD changer in the dash. Since the W220 has the CD changer in the trunk (I think), then maybe it would work in these cars as well.

W220 C/D Changer is in the trunk, on the left side.

A Mercedes obviously!
I've seen a few posts around here from people who have ripped out the COMAND unit and installed newer versions. They looked pretty good but don't forget to consider potential resale issues.

Personally I would be immediately turned off buying a W220/W215 if it had some kind of aftermarket unit.

Fraser, I have considered the resale issue and may just get an updated disc for the Nav. I would like to have some type of bluetooth in the car, but might have to opt for the bluetooth that clips on the sun visor or something. Ive got a local audio store working me up something, but I also have my budget to consider. Thanks for all the info so far.

Zitsky, I have a 2002 S430. The nav works, but it's definitely outdated.

Don't get offended by this, but I don;t understand that statement.

NAV systems work off GPS signals and Preloaded MAp data bases via media. SO the only thing that could get outdated is the Disk you are using,
IF you mean the basic functionality if the system well,, of course it is.. your entire car is.. ITs a 2002 afterall and it happens to be 2009. You have a later entry of what was going on back in 2001/2002. If you want your nav system to be "up to date" you will need another car.

In todays market resale of your car is pathetic no matter hich box is sitting in the dash. BUt as the previous poster pointed out, aside from price, the few would be buyers out there maight be turned away when they se the kenwood sitting there. Then again, you may get lucky.. you never know.

IF you want to shell out a grand or so to get your system redone, more power to you.. I'd just get a Garmin. and let that "outdated" box manage the radio stations.

No offense taken. You are correct it is outdated in every way b/c it is 7.5 years old. As for the resale value, you are also correct as carmax only wanted to give us $10k for it and it only has 42k miles. I guess im just used to jumping in these 2008's-2009's everyday, so I get a little spoiled. Other than that, there is nothing wrong with the car, it feels as solid as the day it was sold. Like I said in the previous post, i'll most likely just get the updated disk, that way it will be less "outdated"

Has anyone looked to see if there is anywhere to download and burn the disc?
I noticed the nav disc in my car is a burne copy, and it is old from 2001

The DVD's are on usenet (at least for europe), but i have never seen a cd unfortunately.

Only chance really is to find a genuine cd and copy it, i managed to get a 2006 UK disc from another car & copy that for my 1999 model.

I've been playing with the idea to get a Pionneer AVIC-F500BT with Nav/Bluetooth/IPOD/USB/SD capability. Under $400 on ebay. Use Aux or Tape Adaptor into the older command. However I dont drive my wife's car enough to find the need to upgrade the HU.

here is the pic of it.

More recent CD sets are available on eBay for peanuts. If you don't need the entire set, there is usually someone who is willing to break a set and sell the CDs you want. They are usually $10 or so each. I'm not sure, but I think NavTeq (they make the OEM map discs) stopped producing the CD version maps a year or two after MB went to DVD-based maps in 2004, so there may be no such thing as 2008 CD maps.

An alternative is a portable GPS. My wife has an '04 Lexus LS430 without nav, but we bought a Garmin Nuvi before we got her car to use in our previous vehicles. You can get Garmins for as little as $100, and you can move it from vehicle to vehicle (or drop it in your pocket and it will navigate the streets of New York while you stroll). That's a lot less expensive than the $200-$375 MB or NavTeq wants for a new set of maps if there is a new set available.
