Out of the car wash, car won't start???

Okay, my 01 s430 w/ 107k miles, sat for about a week, (needs service B) then I drove it today to work. First noticed slight lifter tick when it started up but it leveled out and drove to work fine. After work, hit the car wash, and as I see my car rolling out of the conveyor belt the wash guy is attempting to start the car over and over. I got out there and sure enough he nor I could get it started, they push it over to dry it off, and I call my g/f to come get me. I go look at the car after 5 min and they got it started, but check engine light is on.
-Car drives fine home, I turn it off and on several times, check engine light remains. I drive up the street thinking maybe it was some hiccup, and would clear itself. It sat for another 45 min, (got a haircut) and when I come back out same problem it wouldn't start the first two cycles, then I try again and it starts. I head to a restaurant for a meeting, and when I come out it starts but by the time I get out of the parking lot the car dies, and wont' restart. I have to push this heavy *** benz back in the lot while everyone is staring, and I'm sweating lol.
-I call MB 800-number and he advises to try and clean the infrared port on the key and if that doesn't work tow it to a dealer. It doesn't start, I call tow truck, he takes an hour to get there, when he does it starts right the hell up, lol. I say tow it to the dealer anyway. He towed it dropped it off, and stuck the keys in the after hours service slot.
-I searched the forums and it seems that the drain plugs have clogged on a few cars and they get their SAM flooded or a fuse under the hood, but they have described their dash lights lighting up, and electronic errors. I have seen none of this.
-I also read about a possible bad fuel filter.
Any suggestions before MB gets back with me??

I could almost guarantee this is your CPS.

giveaways, when hot, doesn't start.
after cooling off, starts
intermittant starting, etc.

CPS, cheap and easy to fix

Just went to the dealer and they can't diagnos it till monday. I had to get somethinf out of the car and went to start it, it started fine with NO check enfgine light. Since they were charging me 120 to diagnos it I just took the car home and will consult my independent mechanic. With the light off can I still tell what happened??

I was silly enough to believe that the problem had went away and drove the car to work the last few days and sure enough today at a light it cuts off and wouldn't start. In fact I'm sitting in the car now as I type this on my blackberry hoping it will start back up once it cools down. Can anyone tell me what I'm looking at pricewise for this Crank Position Sensor and if that's indeed the case? LoL, being broke down in a mercedes is ten times worse having a break-down in a hooptie

Its about $125 and labor is about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Out the door for under $300, but highly DIYABLE

what all is involved with replacing it, I'm fairly mechanical but no nothing about THIS car. Just talked to Independent mechanic and he said its a real common occurance more so on the 430, and said it'd be $260 to replace. I searched the forums but didn't find any info on the procedure to replace it. I'm not too pressed about getting it fixed right away, but would like to get if fixed to have another drivable car at my disposable.
Thanks Oliverk for the helpful info BTW.............maybe this will give me an excuse to use the mustang GT convertible I just bought as a daily

OT.....but are you on any of the mustang forums as well??

Its literally 1 electrical connector, 1 torx bolt, and thats it. It slides in and bolts down.

If you put your hood in the service position (i.e. 90 degrees to the ground), you should be able to see it down by the bellhousing on the drivers side. The 210 forum at www.benzworld.org has good info on replacing it.

Im on svtperformance, corral (hardly look at it anymore), stangnet (same), modularfords, and yeah, I think thats it. I really only post on svtp. My name at these places is quadcammer.

I had the same problem a while ago. I took to the dealer. They found several other problems as well. The whole bill came to about $2,200. Almost all of it was covered by my extended warranty.
