Replaced air pump still getting the P0410 - Secondary Air Injection Malfunction error

Error code P0410 - Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

My check engine light has been on for some time. I knew that the P0410 code had to do w/ emissions so I wasn't overly concerned until now since SMOG is due in order to have my car registered.

I had the air pump replaced by a mechanic who said he was 100% sure this is why I was getting the error code. He cleared the code and my check engine light went away. 3 days later it was back, and we are getting the same error code.

I asked him if he replaced/checked the relay and checked all the valves/hoses, which he said he did. When I cold start my car, I believe I can hear the air pump going cause it only stays on for around 20seconds. But I can hear a hissing sound. Could that be a leak? The hissing sound comes from the front right side of the motor. Is this the area of where the air pump is?

Since you replaced the pump, you either still have a leak somewhere or the exhaust return valve may be stuck open (if one even exists on your car, not sure). My experience with these air pumps are on E36 BMWs, which are a pretty common repair for them BTW. The Benzes on the other hand have minimal issues with the air pumps. This is the first I've heard.

When replacing a secondary air pump, it's usually a good idea to replace the hoses too. A hairline crack can disrupt air flow, cause the CEL to light up and would be difficult to spot. I say replace the hoses, make sure everything is fastened correctly and ensure the exhaust return valve is closing correctly (again, if one exists). Good luck!

Is n ot replacing a bad air pump likely to cause any bigger problems over time? Will it burn up the cats or anything like that?

It's solely an emissions device so you can leave it if your local laws don't need a emissions check for rego. Only problem is that the engine light stays on, so you won't know if another fault arises

A little trick For the smog check is to clear the cel. Drive it for 30-40 miles, At a rate of 55-65mph. Then check the readiness for the obdII parameters. Make sure theirs more green bars then red bars. If the cel is still off get it smogged right away before cel comes back on.

The issue may not be a bad pump but the fact that it is running when it is not supposed to.

Many people ( even mechanics ) don;t realize that the secondary air pump is not supposed to be running hen the car is at operating temp. This will cause a running too lean fault most of the time also.
Check to make sure your thermostat is not stuck open or another circuit causing the pump to work all the time.

Its called secondary air pump for a reason.

Turns out the air pump that was replaced by the mechanic was faulty. It stayed on constantly and actually melted a piece of the plastic away. They replaced for free (of course) and I also asked them to change the relay.

After a few days, no check engine light! Car was smogged w/ no issues at all.

the pump may be working properly but the air passages in the head to the cylinders may be clogged, causing o2 not to drop in voltage and me will set fault for air pump malfuction in fuction chain///may be able to clean passages some way but most of the time head has to come off//

Hey guys. I hope you could give me some pointers as I also have this code.

My car is 2006 C230 V6 engine and the codes read are 0810 and 0814 which lead me to P0410 code here.

I read a lot of threads and started replacing first the cheapest parts.

I replaced check valve and pump relay (all OEM) and the pump does start in the morning when engine is cold. If I unplug the air inlet hose it is sucking air but IMO not enough air.

Could it be that the pump itself is failing or are there other things that I can check first. I don't want to shell out 700 EUR for a pump that is working.

I also tried direct 12 V to the pump but then it doesn't start.

I'm lost here so any pointers would be great.

Thank you.
