03+ S600 TT intake ideas

Has anyone tried to lengthen the sensors from the air boxes and run them to the false bulkhead, and then run filters directly on the turbos. Those two sensor are intake air temp are they not?

no, they are pressure sensors. they see if there is a restriction in air flow through the box and if there is, boost will lower to the amount that is available in the more restricted airbox.
i have been thinking about doing what you want, i want to get rid of the airboxes alltogether. running an abs/pvc pipe from turbo to radiator air intake and fitting a k&n filter sideways might work. then run the pcv hose through a catch can and to pvc pipe to get rid of oil sucking into intake. the sensors can be lengthened or maybe just tied down where they are and would read atmospheric pressure, not sure if that would affect boost or not. anyone know if this setup would be better, should have cooler intake air and more of it as well.

Let me see what I can figure up with the sensors. I feel if the vehicle is intercooled that the intake air temperature would not matter as much as the amount of air that can be compressed. Although I know cooler air can be compressed more than warmer air, but the fact that boost can be brought on earlier may have more benefit.

If those are pressure sensors then the ideal pressure would be atmosphere=14.7 psi. And the two turbo's combined put out 14.7 psi. of boost at sea level. So if the computer senses restriction then it would assume that the atmosphere would have a higher constant and thus allow less boost to reach the 14.7 psi.

have you seen the vrp825 package in marco's cl65, it has dual k&n's on both turbos, both sucking hot air in but a lot of it and he has dynoed it at 700hp and 900tq. I dont know what he did with those sensors though, maybe we can find out.

So you are saying the turbos only put out 14.7 psi boost, I thought stock boost was 1.5 bar which is 1.5x14.7psi or aprox 23psi boost. I have the kleeman ecu and tcu upgrade and was told it increases the boost another 3psi on top of stock ie. 26psi boost and at under 3000rpm full boost comes on.
I dynoed b4 and after and got 430hp and then 490 hp max but entire hp curve was elevated 40-50hp.

That is not for certain, but i do remember coming across that figure somewhere. It seems to be difficult to come across info on this subject.

I know that on most turbo charged vehicles by by-passing the sensors the vehicle will run richer and thus the ability to put out more boost manually or electronically. The only problem is I am not sure how sensitive these cars are, but all sensors are doing is giving a voltage reading back to the ECU.

I'll check and make sure I am correct with the stock boost.... Give me a few minutes

Most people would know it as the fire wall, or that thin piece of fire retardant coated sheet metal in between engine and the brake booster/ A/C intake

maybe it is the 65 that has 1.5 bar boost. and we only get 1bar until ecu upgrade, which puts us at stock 65 hp #s. Any way, if we can get the air intake less restrictive we will flow more air even at the same boost level more volume=more power right?

I know for certain that the less distance that the air has to be pulled to get to the inlet of the turbo the less load placed on the turbo and therefore faster spool up and an easy way to get boost sooner. I am going to order this K&N (or two) to try and see how it works and sounds SN-2520 or the RX-3800

I have also heard, but not yet tried, to drill some holes in the underside of the stock airbox so it removes some of the heat off of the electrical components. But that is just hearsay. Although it makes some sense.

I have a post on Benzworld.org on some of my experimenting and photos. I could not get anybody to respond with ideas on there. I use the same handle.

are those tube and cone filter attached? I would not mess with the air box at all. What do you mean by reduce heat to electronics, which electronics-the air pressure sensor is all that is in there. I think we need a more direct air source with huge filter area that will flow 700-800cfm each. i put k&n s in my boxes, they now make them at $85 for a set, but no diference except more spooling and blow off noises.

that sn2520 is for a snow mobile. Way too small, i bet it can only flow 200cfm. We need at least 500 each, stock filters do that.

Yes that is a one piece filter. I have heard from dealers that the ECU, which sits directly under the V12 emblem under that plastic cover, gets too hot and can cause serious problems. I have entertained extending the wires and relocating the ECU to behind the passenger side headlight area, maybe.

Although, how could we measure the cfm that would be pulled directly from turbo to filter? Maybe a longer filter? There are some that are 7 inches long that may be better suited. These are the kind of ideas I was looking for because I can't see paying $5250 for a carbon fiber air box.

me neither, already spent 3000 on kleemann. long and wide is the way to go, the bigger the better if in engine bay. if you route to in front of radiator you are restricted on size. those carbon filter boxes dont flow much more than stock anyway---they look the same but air goes through the top first thru filter and down to turbo--more direct but not much more flow volume. At any rate the air tubes should be bigger than stock so it does not become the flow limiter. maybe 4-5" diameter.

some k&n filters show the cfm rating on the web site. My k&n's show they flow 401cfm which should be more than stock. My K&N's part # is 33-2412, waste of money.

Lets keep our progress posted. When I get back I will see which filter may be the best to test with. I have already modded the exhaust to stop right after the rear wheels and it makes a great difference in the sound.

you cut off the mufflers, right. I did the same thing but exhaust would go into the car thru the trunk, so i put straight pipe back to bumper into slk32amg tips 1 per side, they are wider and taler than stock, made it a little quieter but sounds like a lamborghini when downshifting in M tranny mode. next i will do same with resonators to hear it scream.

make sure you get an oil catch can. I took out my left intercooler and oil dripped out, guess where it is going. straight to intake. i noticed i was getting some pinging at full boost, maybe the oil got into combustion chambers==not good. Ever tried e85, i use half e85 and half 91 octane unleaded and no pinging, also feel more power and it cleans out your fuel system==cheap race gas. dont go over 50/50 or you get lean codes and you get a N/A v12. e85 ethanol is 105 octane vs 91, mixed=98octane at least.

Dude that's NOT the ECU!

That is the voltage converter for the ignition modules.

The ECU is in the passenger side compartment and has a lot more wires than the voltage converter.

What dealer would tell you such crap??

hey oxygen, long time no hear. my car is still in the shop due to the racoon incident. Did you ever get the vrp825 setup? that intake is massive, too bad they could not put it in a cooler area. I think this guy meant v. reg. but put ecu, i know the ecu is in passenger fuse area. you ever see oil in your intercooler driver side due to pcv going to turbo intake? my intercooler was full of oil, dripped half a quart or so out the air outlet when i took it off? time for catch can when i get the car back.

Well like I said it is hard to come by accurate information on my car in South Carolina. Nobody wants to answer any questions and the service managers aren't very knowledgeable. But that would make more sense. I'm glad to hear from you Oxygen I was wondering if you had some photos of your engine bay.

I will only get some exhaust smells with the front windows down at around 100mph. I run 93 with out ethanol. I had a code that indicated a misfire. When I researched it Ethanol attracts water and it is recommended to find fuel without it. It fixed my problem but if it works for you stick with it.

xtc, any update on your new intake. I found out in the e55 thread you dont have to hook up the air sensors to intake, just set aside if you want. but need to plumb pcv to intake.
