It'll be cool if someone installs an iPad in their W220 .. I'm sure it'll be a lot of custom work , but it'll sure look awesome !!! :-)

ipad in 220

Sorry, but I really have to disagree with the cheerleaders about integrating the iPad into the dash. Have seen this type of thing done in Rovers a lot in my past. It just doesn't make sense.

I have an iPad and the coolest thing about it is portability and slim line profile. I know the 220 Nav totally sucks and I know that the iPad is only $800 or so, but this mod seems to take something away from the true, German engineering that I fell in love with when I got my 220.

I actually leave my nav off most of the time since it sucks, it's too pricey to update all the time, etc. and I have the iPad on the passenger seat right next to me all the time anyway.

You know what happens when you start hacking up the interior of a finely engineered German masterpiece...........

Sorry, my $0.02

Thanks,

Do you have an '00-'02 or a later W220? I have an '04 w/latest disc and it really isn't that bad. Sure the live traffic updates and that would be nice (my father had that for a year on his '00 when he purchased it) but it's still a decent system. A few weeks back I went up into wine country and it had all the vineyards on there and trips to golf courses out of town are no problem either.

For a system that's 7yrs old I think it doesn't embarass itself!

Hang out on Rangerovers.net. P38 is the best division but a lot of fellas on RR Sport have done it too.

Whatever there's gas in...
A few questions about this install... How would I be able to charge the iPad? Is it easily removable from the dash?

Just thinking of getting a new iPad to install in W220. It's a bit hard for me to choose the right one from all the iPad versions. What should I consider? The size? Or the charging method?

I don't think iPads are really convenient as a head unit, you should instead buy an Android aftermarket head unit, it's cheaper, looks better and also has a touch screen if that's what you're looking for. I've seen some out there for 500-600$. Screen size is the same as the facelift version, so it's about the same size as an iPad Mini.

Thanks,
I found the old man...

The Germans are great engineers, but not one OEM is doing their infotainment that well. Apple or Google or literally years ahead of the OEMs. And that's speaking of systems right now, in 2019. There isn't a single good part of a 20 year old "high end" system, today.

Totally depends on how you set it up. You could go permanent install or removable. There's pros and cons to each. Power is pretty easy though, get a 2amp cigarette plug style charger and hard wire it behind the dash. Then a regular USB/Lightning cable. There's plenty of room when you remove the factory head unit.

It all comes down to what will fit. There's only so much room to work with, so get the biggest you can fit or the biggest you think will look good. Second would be your budget. There's cars with iPad Minis and cars out there with those big *** 9" or 10" ones.

Tablet installs require a lot of fabrication, iPad or Android, but in a lot of ways they are far superior to the Android head units which can be buggy and seriously lack audio quality. With an iPad or Android tablet you can get high resolution digital audio straight from the device and maintain that digital signal to a processor before the amplifiers. You also get direct updates and the most refined version of the OS. With the Android head units, the internal amplifiers are mediocre quality, the RCA out signal is mediocre so the ultimate signal that reaches the speakers isn't as good as it could be. The head units are less likely to receive updates and other hardware items aren't the best quality.

On the other hand, the Android head units are an easier install, come with some fantastic features like CANBUS integration, tire pressures, dash camera DVR, and reverse camera.

Yeah I just did the Android in my 03 s600 and couldn’t be happier. Still need to intergrate the steering wheel buttons and I had to add an external amp. Luckily I still had an old JL amp from my high school days so fairly easy install.

That's very nice. Looks like you went with one of the bigger screens. Which model is that ?
