2001 S500 Carputer Build
I have always wanted to find a better nav solution. So I figured i would share with my fellow s500 enthusiasts my work in progress. I think this may be the only one in existence right now. I will update this thread as I get farther into the build. Right now only a few days in I have...
1. Re-wired all the speakers (because the amp is fiber optic)
2. Fabricated the bezel that holds the touchscreen
3. Ran the various power wires from the carnetix to the screen and pc
Hardware:
-Liliput 8" Touchcreen
-Acer Aspire One (Netbook)
-Carnetix 12v Power Supply
-Various USB Hubs
-Creative Dolby 5.1 USB Sound Card
-750 watt amp
Operating System:
-Windows 7
Software:
-Centrafuse Front End
-PSUMoni 2140 (Controls 12v start-up and shutdown)
Any questions or comments just ask!

Looks like you've spend a lot of time doing this and a nice clean job.
I think the screen surrounding looks a bit bulbus and screen looks smallish compared to the surrounding face plate.
I don't know how this cover material looks in relations to the other wood surfaces but I remember seeing a modified wood cover to replace the entire face plate for a larger screen on Ebay.
It is hard to tell from the pictures, but if you're happy with the looks, thats all that matters.
Again, the workmanship looks great!

awesome job!
personally it seems much easier to just go with an ipad

bigger clearer screen too, if the pic above had a nicer wood console it would look awesome

i do think its way better than the early navi screens. Looks wise, I'll take a later DVD comand any day.
That said, I'm sue the functionality is way better on the carputer.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys! Screen could be larger, just wanted a factory look and feel. A lot of the software is optimized for this screen resolution so it makes it a lot less of a hassle to go with the smaller one as well.
I seen the iPad thread a few weeks ago, me personally i think its cool it just doesnt have all the capability a carputer has. User interface-wise its probably a lot easier to control, everyone knows how easy apple products are to use.
I will keep the thread updated as i move along!

Nice, verrry nice
so starting the car up it boots immediately?
Do they make bigger touchscreen than 8"?
That way, you can shave the bezel rather than fill it in???
